Travel
Use of a car is essential. Cars can be hired from any of the airports. The closest airports are Bergerac (1 hour), Bordeaux (2 hours), Toulouse (2.5 hours), Limoges (2 hours). We are approximately 8 hours drive from Calais and 6 hours from Paris.

Distances
The quaint medieval village centre of Meyrals is a 2 minute stroll. The towns of Les Eyzies and St. Cyprien are a 10 minute drive. Sarlat is a 15-20 minute drive and the cities of Perigueux and Bergerac are just under 1 hours drive.

Further details
Les Eyzies (in the Vezere valley) is the European Capital of Pre-history and is 10 minutes away. It abounds with 17,000 years-old cave art and other notable periods in history. Cro-Magnon man was discovered here. The Dordogne valley 10 minutes south has many reminders of the historical relationship with the English such as the dramatic 'Beynac castle' whcih was taken by Richard the Lionheart! On the opposite side of the river is Castelnaud whilst a short distance away is the pretty bastide town of Domme: all can be visited easily from 'Le Jardin des Amis'. One of the best ways to appreciate the beauty of these sites is to view them from the river: either by canoe for or more sedately from a 'gabare' (traditional flat-bottomed boats which give trips along the river).

The gourmet delights of foie gras, duck confit and truffles, to name but a few, are standard fare in the local restaurants at wonderfully low prices, not to mention the local Bordeaux and Bergerac wines.

Guest comments
"The location is wonderful and I haven't stopped telling everyone about it yet. Less than 10 minutes away from 3 very interesting and attractive villages; less than 20 minutes away from Sarlat, an excellent historical town with the second biggest market in France; and less than 15 minutes away from significant tourist attractions such as caves, chateaux" (Bob & Margie, Canada)

"Forty minutes from Brive and nestled quietly between St Cyprien, Sarlat and Les Eyzies lies the beautiful village of Meyrals and the wonderful Jardin des Amis. We took care to pick a rural setting with a pool and nearby restaraunt and were really pleased with our accomodation. So with the basics out of the way we booted up the sat nav to scope out all the tourist attractions recommended to us by a friend and it was then that we really appreciated the beauty of Meyrals. Out of 10 or so locations, only 2 were more than 20km from our base which meant no painfully early departures" (Glenn/Sara, Wales)

Owner profile

Us with our entry to the 'epouventail' festival!

About the owner
We are the live-in owner/managers of Le Jardin des Amis. Having made a 'spur of the moment' decision to move to France after our first visit to the beautiful 'Perigord Noir' area of the Dordogne, we arrived here in Meyrals 3 months later! In England, I (Sue) was a teacher whilst Jon was a Chartered Surveyor, but with 4 grown up children, we were feeling in need of a change of lifestyle before we were too old to appreciate it! We love the fact that Meyrals is a quiet & peaceful village but big enough to have a boulangerie, bar, restaurants etc. which we can walk to and leave the car behind. There are a wonderful array of flowers and fungi which grow wild here, including many variety of orchids to be discovered when out walking, and of course there is always another castle or cave to visit.

Year purchased: 2007

Why the owner chose a home in this location
We bought a property in the village of Meyrals because it felt like stepping back in time: some of the buildings are medieval, all are old, and the way of life is still a slower version of our previous life in the English countryside. Despite the tranquility of the village, it still has the convenience of a bar, 2 restaurants, boulangerie, post office and a tiny weekly market! The area abounds with pretty villages and amazing sights: huge limestone cliffs - home to innumerable caves; imposing castles, beautiful chateaux, and the natural beauty of the Vezere and Dordogne rivers - most of which can be reached in just 10 - 15 minutes or so.

Unique benefits of the property
Visitors to le Jardin des Amis can take a morning stroll into the village for their freshly baked bread or croissants for a breakfast in the sun on their private patio area. Next take a visit to Les Eyzie and the famous Font de Gaume caves (10 minutes away), hire a canoe for a day on the Dordogne (15 minutes away), or meander through the beautiful medieval streets of Sarlat, shopping at the vast market (20 minutes drive). After a busy day sightseeing, return for a relaxing swim in our lovely 'salt system' pool, wander in our orchard, meadow and woods, have a quiet game of boules, join in with an informal table tennis or badminton tournament or just socialise with a drink at our pool bar. For children, there is lots of space to race around, books and games to borrow and new friends to mak
