The Nie valley (just East of St. Jean D’Angely) is about 40 mins drive inland from Rochfort and only 4 hrs drive from the port of St. Malo, our location is the midst of a part of hidden France, where time seems to have stood still for centuries. A former (Napoleonic era) farm, we are well established and centrally located for easy access to both the coastal and many inland attractions of Charente-Maritime. We are specially set up for families with younger children (12 and under). The main lawn/swings area is enclosed, gated and within full view of all the cottages, so that parents can relax while the children play with all their new friends. In addition to the communal areas, all cottages have their own private outdoor areas with dining furniture, parasol and BBQ. The seaside and the coastal towns are an easy day out; beaches within 1hr drive. 3 historic market towns within 15 mins drive. Peaceful, quiet, rural valley. Cots, stairgates, highchairs, strollers etc. provided FOC.

Babysitting is available @ 10€/hr (experienced childminders)
All cottages have been made as child-friendly as possible. Cots, highchairs, stairgates, stroller, baby monitor, toy and book boxes and any other baby/toddler equipment are provided FOC on request.
We want the whole family to relax on holiday so we don't normally don't ask for a security deposit. Our cottages are clean and comfortable but devoid of expensive high tech equipment, antique furniture or "precious breakable nic-nacs". We don't encourage kids to draw on the sofas, but if they do we won't spit the dummy !
All cottages have thick stone walls and so remain generally cool but are well equipped with electric fans in case of prolonged heatwaves.
All kitchens are equipped with dishwasher, washing machine, gas oven and hob, microwave and fridge/freezer. Lot of pots and pans etc. + plastic crockery and cutlery for small children to use.

Accessibility
One cottage (Verdhello) has a self-contained downstairs area specially set up for wheelchairs. Low ramp from garden, extra-wide doors, turning areas, large shower with seat, grab bars, raised w.c. etc. Outside there are no steps. There is a ramp to the pool area and everything else is on the same level. Wheelchairs can be hired locally if necessary.

Outside
The swimming pool (shared between the four cottages) is 50m2, tiled and heated with 65% coverage solar panels - approx 6 degrees warmer than unheated outdoor pools. (Average July temp 29 degrees during 2006). The pool has underwater lighting and the area is fully enclosed and gated for safety.
The pool area has it's own lawn, marquis and sun terrace with pool beds and tables.
Pool depth is from 90cm (shallow end - centre) with a diving pool (2m) at the deep end. There is a separate inflatable splash pool for smaller children.
The children’s' playground forms part of the main lawn, which is fully enclosed by the cottages and the barn. There are two gates between the main lawn and the pool area (the two are separated by the main car park).
The playground has two sets of swings, a hammock, trampoline, small slide and large covered sandpit.
Off the main lawn there is a barn with table tennis. There is also a field where we hold regular soccer matches during high season.

Coast/Beach
Nearest beach is at Fouras (approx 45mins). Many good beaches are within about a 1hr drive.

Guest comments
Some guest comments from 2007:

"Fantastic location and superb facilities for young children"
Urquhart Family, Columbard July 2007.

Very well equipped gite, especially child friendly for young families. We couldn't imagine a better set-up of garden, pool and sitting area and have never found it in any previous gites, villas or apartments we've stayed in. Reid Family, Columbard, July 2007.

We very much enjoyed our holiday at LaVendange - The garden (in particular the slides and the chickens!) was a hit with our daughter who loved running around and letting off steam. The peace and quiet of the area was fantastic and there are plenty of interesting places to visit for all ages. Could have done with longer than a week to fit it all in! Sayers Family, Columbard, June 2007.

Very toddler friendly gite and gardens - a perfect layout for young families Smyth Family, Syrah, June 2007.
