Converted Stone Barn in Traditional French Village
Easy Access to Beaches, Mountains and Spain
Sleeps 2/6 (3 Bedrooms)
|
|
La Grange is a conversion of a traditional stone-built barn, maintaining some original features, such as beams and exposed stone walls, in a fully modernised setting. The bedrooms and bathrooms are downstairs, which remains cool in summer. The main upstairs living accommodation comprises a 37 sq.m open plan area with a sloping wood-clad ceiling rising from 2 to 4.5 metres - a striking and airy space - with patio doors leading directly onto the main walled terrace. Situated in the old part of the village, close to the chateau of Templar origin and the excellent wine cave, La Grange is well placed to access the many features the area has to offer: leisure/sporting and cultural. The property itself offers comfortable and spacious accommodation in an undisturbed setting, with plenty of parking directly outside. Corneilla del Vercol is a quiet village, but with easy access to major road systems, making it an excellent base for exploring the area, while keeping away from the crowds.

Notes on accommodation
La Grange is excellent for families with children with lots of space both dowstairs and upstairs for playing safely. The house is not overlooked by any adjacent properties, the main walled terrace offering complete privacy for sunbathing, family meals etc. For late autumn/winter rentals, the house is equipped with a storage heater downstairs and electric convector heaters in the bedrooms. Upstairs in the main living area there are convector heaters and a wood-burning stove.
Outside
The walled terrace is completely secluded, excellent for sunbathing and quiet relaxation; it is equipped with dining-table and 6 chairs, and loungers. The summer kitchen has hot and cold running water. The upper sun terrace has views of the mountains and the cathedral at the nearest town, Elne (3km).
Coast/Beach
The nearest swimming facility is the lake of Villeneuve de la Raho (3km), a well-developed facility with a small water park with slides. The lake itself has lifeguards, pedalos, cafe/restaurants, the warm, shallow water being ideal for young children. The nearest Mediterranean beach is at St Cyprien (5km). For rocky coves and snorkelling, Collioure (10km) also offers excellent shops and restaurants. Local resorts offer a full range of activities, including scubadiving, jetskiing, kitesurfing.
Golf
The nearest golf course (27 hole) is at St Cyprien (5km).
Travel
Air-Perpignan (30 minutes) Ryanair, BMIBaby, Flybe, Girona (80 minutes) Ryanair. Train- Eurostar/TGV: London-Lille-Perpignan. Bus service in village but car desirable. The Conseil Generale (local government) has recently introduced 1 euro fares for any bus journey irrespective of distance.
Distances
The nearest town, Elne (3km) is of Roman origin and boasts a superb medieval cathedral and cloister.
The regional capital of Perpignan (9km) has excellent museums, galleries and shops, the Palace of the Kings of Majorca and the narrow streets of the old quarter.
This area of French Catalunya is also famous for the remains of the Cathar castles, and for its light which attracted many famous artists, notably to Collioure and Ceret.
Further details
Corneilla itself has a general store, post office, tabac, pharmacie, hairdresser, bar and an excellent boulangerie. There is also a doctor's surgery in the village. Wine is available from the prize-winning cave, one minute's walk from the house. The nearest banks and supermarkets are in Elne. There are countless restaurants within easy reach, and a multi-screen cinema complex with restaurants and 10-pin bowling a five minute drive towards Perpignan. Apart from the obvious attractions of the Mediterranean, the area offers numerous other activities, from walking in the Pyrenees to white-water sports on the River Tet. Ski resorts (Font Romeu etc) can be reached in 90 minutes. The region is very proud of its Catalan heritage which is celebrated with many festivals throughout the year. With its mild climate, especially on the plain of Roussillon, this is another feature which makes it an ideal all-year holiday destination.
The olive harvest marks the first festivals of the year, one of the best being at Espolla, just across the border into Spain, on the 3rd Sunday in January. Easter is widely celebrated with the Procession of the Penitentes in Perpignan on Good Friday (and free omelettes and wine in Corneilla village square on Easter Sunday!). Easter markets abound in local villages, especially on Easter Monday. Late Spring sees water sports festivals on the coast and the Canet Boat Show, while the Girona Flower Festival and the Ceret Cherry 'Fete de la Cerise' in May are well worth a visit. Most communes hold some sort of fete during the summer where local produce can be tasted and bought. The Perpignan International Photojournalism exhibition in September has displays in many beautiful public buildings in the old centre of the city and gathers crowds from around the world.

Thanks for meeting us and many thanks for the rent of La Grange, great property, great location. We went all the way down the coast into Spain and many points inland such as Carcassonne and Ceret, all had a great time.
We had a wonderful holiday we loved the house and the area. We hope to make a return trip as some point without children so that we can explore more.
La Grange is a lovely place to stay, and hopefully we'll be able to return sometime in the future. In the meantime we will have no hesitation in recommending you to others planning to stay in the area.
We very much enjoyed our stay at La Grange. A lovely barn conversion with everything we could need available. The area was interesting to explore and the beaches fab. Jon really loved 'le petit train jaune'!
We had a fabulous time zooming around French Catalonia, and your house in Corneilla del Vercol was a great 'home' to come back to - with the best boulangerie in France.
