‘La Gilardie’ forms part of the owners old Perigordian farmhouse, renovated to a very high standard. It is set in a very quiet hamlet, about 3 km from St. Aulaye. We are surrounded by fields, woods and numerous lakes, ideal for walking, or exploring the many medieval villages in this area. The nearest large town is the market town of Ribérac, about 22 km away. Saint Aulaye with its 13th century bastide has all the amenities to make your holiday successful: bank, post office, small supermarket, restaurants, river beach, doctors and of course several bars.

Owner profile

About the owner
Cliff and I were not ready for retirement, we needed one more adventure before time forced us to slow down. What better than to start a new life in a foreign country, get to know new people and customs and get more sunshine into the bargain! We love this country and its people, who welcomed us with open arms and helped us to realize our dream. After living most of our time in London, this is (still!) paradise!

Year purchased: 1980's

Why the owner chose a home in this location
We came to the Dordogne in 1988 and fell in love with the beautiful 'Forêt de la Double', an ancient forest, once the haunt of thieves and cattle rustlers. We found our house ,(really a series of barns) and knew that it was meant for us. We converted all the barns into the house it is now, one part for our visitors and the other part for us. The countryside, with its lakes, woods, fields and picturesque villages, is beautiful and quiet, a perfect place to relax and recharge your batteries.

Unique benefits of the property
La Gilardie is a one-story building, spacious and bright. There are no stairs or steps, everything is on the ground floor. Essential shops are a 5-minute drive away, but you could think that the few inhabitants of our little hamlet are the only people in the world. Cliff and I are there, to help you, as much or as little as you want, to make the best of your visit to this lovely corner of France.
