Accessibility
Although the owner would be happy to make arrangements for individual clients - the provision of ramps, for example - the property is not marketed as wheelchair-friendly and should not be regarded as suitable for the seriously disabled. Having said that, there is a bathroom and lavatory on the ground floor and downstairs sleeping accommodation can be provided at no extra cost.
Externally the site slopes gently.
Outside
The house shares a front garden with the owner's adjoining house. It contains swings, one picturesquely under a weeping willow, and parking provision.
The almost secret back garden, secluded and in summer nearly invisible from the road, is reached via a gated pergola and opens out to the area, receiving the sun all day, that contains the 6m x 3m (1.3m deep) below-ground pool. This has an extended paved area with a barbecue. Another area overlooking the pool has several shade trees and access to the main house with its changing room.
The house has a barbecue, and garden furniture on the terraces. It has as its main terrace the pool area; in addition to this there is a small south-facing granite terrace at the front.
Coast/Beach
From Kersulan, you are about 45 minutes by car from the start of the peninsula's southern coastline - one of France's best-kept secrets. Lorient has the estuary of the River Blavet; Vannes, to the south-east, has the Golfe du Morbihan - a fascinating multi-faceted area with islands and moorings and birds and cottages that is a paradise for sailors. Reaching the beaches at Carnac, Erdeven and Trinité sur Mer takes about an hour; the Quiberon peninsula a little longer.
Golf
The house is within 10 minutes of the Rimaison golf course, and the River Blavet.
Plans are in hand to extend the Rimasion course to eighteen holes.
Special interest holidays
The activities that centre around the River Blavet consist of bars, restaurants, canoeing, pedalos, cruises, fishing, cycling, walking. St Nicolas les Eaux, perhaps 5 minutes from Kersulan, features nearly all of them; but to concentrate on that village to the exclusion of other areas would be a mistake. Where the Blavet goes through Pontivy, for example, it lends character and beauty – and several other activities not listed here – to the town; at St Rivalain you can walk along the towpath which is almost deserted even on a bank holiday. Past Castennec the river winds round outcrops, and the ancient chapel of St Gilda built in part out of the hanging rock, on its way to the south coast.
The Lac de Guerlédan, near Mur de Bretagne, is particularly worth a visit: consisting of several lakes at different levels, it combines brilliant views with the provision of a hydro-electric power station that takes advantage of the differing water levels. There is a beach, and many walks.
Travel
With the increase in cheap flights it is sound to make enquiries about flights from near your home to Dinard (90 min. from here), Brest (120), Lorient (45), Nantes or Rennes (90).
There are many ferry ports: Roscoff if you come from the west of England, St Malo from Portsmouth, taking the overnight ferry or daytime FastCat. Cherbourg, Caen and Le Havre are further afield. A surprisingly large number of guests trade ferry-time for driving, and take the shortest ferry route to Calais.
Distances
Brest is 100 miles.
St Malo 75 miles.
Cherbourg 150 miles approximately.
Calais 375 miles approximately.
The owner sends detailed directions to Kersulan from all these places.
Further details
Peter Firth bought the house from an English couple who over a 10 year period had made a sensitive job of restoring and upgrading it. It is aimed at the higher end of the market, with a high level of appointments and no hidden extras; nearly all of the income from each season's rentals is re-invested in improvements, and the property has recently had a major refurbishment.
With few exceptions, Peter remains in attendance throughout the season: he tries to combine availability with unobtrusiveness. (Precisely how successfully he achieves this is not for him to say! - but it does seem to work to everybody's advantage.)
TIP: if you possibly can, come in the period 02/04/05 to 09/07/05. This graceful country is wonderfully beautiful at this time - and there is nobody here! Because rentals are flat at this time of the year I have kept the prices as low as I dare, consistent with a half-decent return; and the weather, and the long evenings, are generally marvellous.
TIP 2: don't be deterred from enquiring about Christmas/New Year..... the reason no price is quoted is simply that I never know what my children will be doing, and whether as a result the houses will be available. (They would, as is the way of children, give me all of 48 hours' notice for this dubious privilege.....)
