Owner profile

My studio is a great environment to be creative in

About the owner
Hi, My husband Keith and I bought our Charentaise farmhouse in 2000 and moved over full time in 2006. We love the laid back life in the Charente, its micro climate and rolling countryside. When not looking after our Gite and our large garden, I restore oil paintings, gilt frames and watercolours - I was a restorer for over 30years in the UK, working for galleries, museums and private collectors. We converted one of our outbuildings into a studio -fondly called 'The Goat Pens' which is a wonderful environment to work in - I have beautiful views across the valley towards Cognac to give me inspiration! We have two very friendly Black Labradors called Mac & Zac, six chickens and a cockerel - their eggs are fabulous! As you will find out when you come and stay with us.

Year purchased: 2000

Why the owner chose a home in this location
We wanted a house in France that was far enough away from the UK to be 'typically' French and offered a good climate, good food and wine. The Charente is a beautiful area - we just never get tired of the views we are so lucky to have. The night skies are staggering -with no light pollution, its an astronomer's dream. It was important that there were good communication links -we are close to the N10 which is the main route down to Spain and Portugal, we are served by three airports - Poitiers, Limoges, and Angoulme/Cognac with Ryanair offering cheap flights to and from the UK. Of course we also have the TGV - Paris is only 2+ hours away. Our house is in a very rural area but only a few miles from the nearest town (Mansle). It's just perfect - hopefully you will find out for yourself!

Unique benefits of the property
As we live here full time we get the benefits of seeing the seasons change the landscape -this year the farmer planted sunflowers in the field opposite our house -they were beautiful. Guests staying in our gite are able to use the swimming pool (which will be heated from 2010), use our bikes - it's perfect cycling country, play table tennis or just chill out in their own private garden -it's all about relaxing. The gite has it's own parking to, so no security worries - not that crime is ever an issue in the Charente! Bread is delivered five days a week by Lilly the bread lady who drives a transit van like Jenson Button! Above all, we want to offer guests a memorable holiday experience -judging by the comments left in our guest book, we think we have just about got it right!
