Further details
The history of the Dordogne dates back to pre-historic times and there is plenty to discover, like the famous cave paintings at Lascaux, near Montignac, the troglodytic dwellings at nearby La Roque St Christophe, and the many medieval towns and villages with magnificent chateaux, religious buildings and fortications.
The countryside is famously beautiful with it's rolling hills and wooded valleys, vineyards and nut groves. The rivers of the Dordogne and Vezere provide for all kinds of interests, from walking to canoeing, observing wildlife or simply taking in the scenery along their banks from the decks of a Gabare. There is plenty of walking and cycling to be be enjoyed, and there is also a scenic railway at Martell, just south of Brive. A hot air balloon trip over the Dordogne will provide a different perspective, but if you're not that brave take a trip to Domme and gaze down over the river from the dizzy heights of this rocky outcrop. Even below the landscape there are some marvels to be seen, such as the Gouffre de Padirac and other underground chambers.
There is a market somewhere almost every day, and during the summer there are Vide-Greniers most weekends, which are a mixture of village fete and car boot sale, and provide marvellous opportunities for people-watching.
There are also the gastronomic delights of the region: wine and cheese, mushrooms and truffles, foie gras, walnuts and chestnuts, and all kinds of artisan conserves.

About the owner
We are inveterate explorers and we've travelled all over France and Spain, on whirlwind fortnight long tours during our annual leave.
Our holidays are generally spent in a small camper that we converted ourselves. This has allowed us to visit all kinds of places that just don't make it into holiday brochures. It also means we get to know the locals better.
The more we got to know France the more we wanted to be there, and it had to be somewhere green and rural. It took us 2 years to find the right house in the right place.
We're pleased to be able to share it with our visitors and hope you enjoy your time there as much as we do.
Year purchased: 2010
Why the owner chose a home in this location
We have had Les Taupinières since September 2010 and it is the beginning of our dream for the future. It will definitely be our retirement home but if there's a way to get there sooner we will take it.
We love the peace and seclusion of the location; the grandstand view of every sunset and the clear starry skies unspoiled by light pollution. We also love the light and the space in the house.
We think it has the best of both worlds - deep in the country but in easy reach of Terrasson and Brive, and all the major airports and motorways.
It is also easy to get into the heart of the Dordogne and explore all the things the area is famous for: Beautiful scenery, history dating back to the dawn of modern man; lovely houses, towns and villages and fabulous food.
