Skiing
Akaslompolo is in the heart of an extensive cross country ski area with over 330km of pisted tracks winding through the forests and over the hills. There are many little shelters dotted around the forest with log fires to cook your sausages or toast your sandwich! You can normally ski from the door though the official tracks start only 300m from the cabin.
The downhill skiing is also superb with a new gondola, fast chairs and over 50 runs to choose from. The beginners area is as good as you could wish for - easy slopes, a gentle button lift and great snow! Ski schools operate throughout the season. Check on line for the start and end of the season for lift operation.
Special interest holidays
In winter if you want a break from the skiing there are many other activities on offer including husky dog safaris, snow scooter hire, snow shoe hikes - and of course around Christmas Santa is there!
In the summer the cross country tracks become walking paths or cycle routes and with the sun never setting you have 24 hours a day to fish, ride, walk or simply relax.
Travel
There are various ways of getting there. In winter there are charter flights from many airports in the UK to Kittila which is just 45 minutes from Akaslompolo. Buses meet all the flights.
You can also fly via Helsinki (BA, Easyjet and Finnair) or Tampere (Ryanair).
There is also a sleeper train from Helsinki or Tampere to Kolari and a bus meets the train. Please ask for any advice or suggestions on how best to get there
Distances
The heart of the village is approximately 1km away and the ski bus stops just 300m from the cabin.
Further details
Akaslompolo is a traditional Finnish village set north of the Arctic Circle. It has no high rise buildings or traffic jams or crowds of people but still provides all the amenities you could ask for. Local companies provide winter and summer activities, including equipment rental - you can also rent thermal suits if you feel the cold!
In the winter you may be lucky enough to see the Northern lights and in the summer the sun never sets. All year round the air is pure, the setting idyllic and the location peaceful - a perfect holiday spot.

Owner profile
About the owner
We travel all over the world and one year visited Akaslompolo for a cross country ski holiday. We loved the place so much we bought a cabin!
Year purchased: 2008
Why the owner chose a home in this location
We visit the village every year, winter and summer if we can. For us the tranquillity of the area and the superb cross country skiing are the big attractions. The people are warm and friendly and the great snow makes a huge difference when booking a week's skiing far in advance
Unique benefits of the property
The property is located in a peaceful location but a short walk brings you to the ski bus and the centre of the village. In winter we normally put our cross country skis on at the cabin door and ski along a path to the official tracks.
