London has hosted the Olympic games previously in 1908 and 1948 and will now host it for a third time in 2012. The games start on 27th July 2012 with the opening ceremony and runs until 12th August 2012. Events will be taking place in a variety of new venues as well as some existing ones and London is currently busy preparing for the two week sporting spectacular!

The excitement and roar of the Formula 1 Grand Prix makes it one of the most exciting sports to watch anywhere in the world. Watch the world's best racing car drivers and their teams battle it out for points and the coveted world champion title.
The races are held in some of the world's greatest cities, so you can combine a great holiday of sight seeing with the thrill of spectating at this world famous event.

The Tour de France is synonymous with cycling and is a great event for both cyclists and spectators from all around the world. The first race was staged in 1903 and it is now held annually in France and nearby countries. The race covers more than 3,600 kilometres (2,200 mi) and lasts three weeks.
Golf – the British Open Championships
July 2011
Let's hope the rain holds off for once for the British Open being held in Kent from July 14-17th. Golf enthusiasts will be flocking to the small town of Sandwich to see big names battling it out for the famous Claret Jug trophy. The good news is that tickets for the 2011 open are still available via the British Open's official website. Kent is the ideal area too for golfing widows with its spectacular castles, gardens, stately homes and of course… shops!

Wimbledon Tennis Championships

The traditional English tennis event that is Wimbledon is one of the top four grand slam events, along with the Australian Open in Melbourne, French Open in Paris and US Open in New York. Wimbledon was the first of the majors, beginning in 1877.
As well as tennis, Wimbledon is also famous for strawberries and cream and rainy afternoons with Cliff Richard (although not any more on centre court since they installed a roof in 2009!).

FA Cup Final
Annual
Watching the FA Cup Final live has got to be one of the most exciting experiences in any football fanatic's annual calendar. Chelsea FC are the current holders of the FA cup after beating Portsmouth 1-0 in 2010. We wonder who's going to take the trophy this year? Taking place on 14th May 2011 at Wembley Stadium, there's still a chance to buy tickets for the match. Why not extend your visit to London with a bit of sightseeing as mid-May is the perfect time with at least a chance of a bit of early summer weather.

Badminton Horse Trials
April / May, annually
Watch the world's top riders gear up for next year's Olympics at Badminton Horse Trials at Easter weekend (21st-25th April 2011). Usually on at the beginning of May, Badminton in Gloucestershire is renowned for being the greatest three day event in the world, attracting one of the largest crowds of any sporting event. Top riders competing in 2011 include William Fox-Pitt and Mark Todd with Pippa Funnell returning for the first time since 2008.

Beach Football World Cup in Italy

Here’s a sporting event that’s a little different for you – even if it’s still football. The Italian town of Ravenna is host to the Fifa Beach Soccer World Cub from September 1st 2011. It promises to be an action-packed event, but if you want to get away from the sport for a while, the nearby Italian coast is gorgeous with fabulous beaches, lots of delightful restaurants and a great atmosphere.

The Rugby World Cup in New Zealand
Sept 9th - Oct 23rd 2011
Whilst New Zealand may be the other side of the world from the UK, devoted Rugby fans are still prepared to travel to see their favourite teams in action from September 9th to October 23 2011. There'll be a chance to get around a bit too with 12 cities hosting the games – but the final rounds will be hosted by Wellington, Chirstchurch and Aukland. Travelling to New Zealand is without a doubt the trip of a lifetime, and if you're a rugby fan what better excuse is there to visit this beautiful country?
