Lilac Cottage with its pretty walled garden is situated in the middle of the attractive village of Smallridge, 2½ miles from the small market town of Axminster, near the South Devon coast. Lovely beaches, fishing and sailing are within a seven to ten mile radius at Lyme Regis, Charmouth and Seaton Hole. Exmouth, Exeter and Weymouth are also within easy reach. The whole area is very beautiful and an ideal centre from which to explore the West Country. Smallridge is on the borders of three counties, Devon, Dorset and Somerset. Pets welcome, by arrangement. The cottage, which was built of stone several hundred years ago, has thick walls and low ceilings. It stands by itself, in its own pretty walled and gated garden, and has a private drive and garage. It is most comfortable, with full oil fired central heating throughout.

About the Owner

Joanna and Bill Stuart-Bruges bought their first property in France in 1973, when they originally fell in love with the amazing Lot/Dordogne/Aquitaine region. At that time Bill's job had taken them, just married, to Bordeaux. They already had little Lilac Cottage in Devon. Now based in Hampshire, they now spend half their time in France, where Joanna has built up a team of excellent local craftsmen and housekeepers to restore and help look after 3 châteaux, as well as the original little farmhouse Lafage. The family includes several musicians and there are now 5 grand pianos and one upright, distributed amongst the properties!

Why this location?

We bought Lilac Cottage in 1968, when we were very young! It is an enchanting cottage, which cried out to us from across the valley, saying that "I'm the ideal pretty little place to escape to and relax in". As we approached we found it was for sale. Love at first sight!! Lilac Cottage is now looked after by the grand daughter of the original owner, it is still very much loved by one and all. Holidays here are idyllic, with a private drive & a pretty little walled cottage garden, convenient for young children and pet lovers. The coast at Seaton & Lyme Regis 7 miles, and surrounding country side are fun for beach holidays, fishing trips and wonderful walks. There is an excellent pub within walking distance in the village, which does excellent bar meals, ideal after a long day out!
