Appledore has a variety of interesting shops tucked away in and around its narrow picturesque streets, with art galleries, craft shops, a specialist chocolate shop, a tea shop, 2 fish and chip shops, a newsagent and Appledore ice cream for sale from a van on the quay. 'John's of Appledore', a superb delicatessen and general store, sells everything you need - yummy fresh bread, locally caught fish, wines, greengrocery, everyday groceries and it has a post office which also acts as a cashpoint (extremely useful!). There are several place to eat along the quay. Johns has a small cafe, The Quay, Bensons and The Seagate (a good pub and restaurant!). There are 2 bakers and a good butcher in Westward Ho and in Bideford (10 mins) there is a large Morrisons supermarket. Opposite Appledore, on the other side of the estuary, in Instow, there are several eating places which are worth trying. The Bar, The Boathouse, The Wayfarer, The Instow Arms and for something more formal, try The Commodore Hotel. During the season there is a ferry service from Appledore to Instow, times vary with the tide.
Carin Cottage has a woodburning stove and during the winter months a 'fuel starter pack' is provided (further supplies being available from John's on the quay). However, over the Christmas and New Year period, a good supply of logs will be supplied, hopefully to see you through your holiday.
House swap considered.
About the Owner
We bought Carin Cottage in 2011, when we retired. It has proved very successful and we are gradually upgrading the property - the garden is now finished, extra radiators in the sitting room and new furniture throughout. The bathroom has just been completely refurbished (Sept 2013) We do sometimes manage to have a few days 'holiday' but mostly when we stay in the cottage the paintbrushes come out. Feed-back from our guests is always very helpful and we are always thrilled when people come back for a second or even third time. We think it is a lovely cottage and reading the Visitors Book you seem to think so to!
Year property purchased: 2011
Why this location?
We both love the area and there is so much to see and do - even when it's raining. Access to the area is easy - M5 and then head West! During the Summer months it's a busy area as the beaches are super and surfing and boarding are extremely popular - Golf too! lots and lots of courses in the area - One I believe is the oldest in England! We like the Winter months - it's quiet and the walks along the beach paths are amazing especially when the sea is up! Restaurants are good with lots of local produce - especially 'fish'. The cottage has a great wood burning stove so you are never cold and what with the installation of an extra radiator in the sitting room you are 'toasting'.
