Owner profile
About the owner
Barry and Barbara Terry came with their young family to Southwood in 1978. It had taken them a couple of years of searching for a quiet, very rural but not remote holiday home in Devon for their extended family to find Southwood. Barry at that time was a London based bank manager and Barbara's Civil Service background had moved on to a wide interest in schools, education, history and religion whilst at home with the children. Thrilled to have a Devon base for as much of the year as they could manage, they settled on the edges of country life, until in 1987 they moved with their extended family to nearby Torridge House. There they threw themselves into establishing a small farm and family activities around a group of cottages. Barry leaving the bank to build pig sties and muck them out!
Year purchased: 1970's
Why the owner chose a home in this location
We loved the quiet countryside setting of Southwood and the beautiful landscape around it. We came more and more to relish the straightforward, natural approach to life in North Devon, where people are valued for who they are and where there's no keeping up with the Jones. Although off the beaten track, Southwood is not remote. It is only a couple of miles or so from Great Torrington. And I have to admit that it was the view from Great Torrington's 1646 car park, that initially drew us to this part of the country. How big decisions are made!
Unique benefits of the property
Southwood has remarkable gardens, not that they are fancy, but they have a very special feel to them. The house itself sits close on the little Devon lane, but the gardens behind and beside the house are private and big enough to give you special places. Inside Southwood there are lots of rooms and lots of space, with plenty of bathrooms and 3 different sitting areas, there's also good options for privacy within the house. Southwood is well placed for the Tarka Trail - just down the (steep!) lane, for the delights of Torridge House, the historic town of Great Torrington, fishing villages, beaches and moors, as well as markets and attractions of all sorts. RHS Rosemoor Gardens is a mile away, Dartington Crystal, 1646 Experience 2 miles and a good choice of good attractions generally.
