Gran Belles is truly a home from home. A grade 2 listed property, the house is a bit like a tardis. Open the front door on to the listed hall way and you'll find this seemingly little house magically grows with ease to become a family home for 8. Irsha Street is one of the most popular streets in Appledore; the sea splashes against the homes on one side, whilst homes on the other side treasure private south facing secluded gardens -like Gran Belles. With two decked terraces that are ideal for blue sky breakfasts and BBQs, apple and pear trees, the garden gate opens to your private car parking space - ideal for unloading suitcases and surf boards! Because holiday homes should offer everything your own home provides, you'll find everything you need here, even down to an ice cream making machine, although Appledore's own Hockings ice cream is such a treat you may not need it. It's a much loved gem in a fab location, Appledore charms everyone with its magic, you'll fall under its spell.

Notes on accommodation
Gran Belles is a home from home, so unlike many holiday cottages which we sometimes found impersonal, Gran Belles is very much a family home, pictures of real people, including my great grandma who lived in Irsha Street many many years ago. Book cases are full of books, all of which you are welcome to read, there is an assortment of wet weather gear, crab fishing equipment and tools and accessories that come in handy. We want you to have a truly magical holiday in a personal home, so we leave all manner of things that make Gran Belles home for us for you to enjoy. We are always happy to talk to you prior to your visit and help suggest restaurants, pubs and places to visit. We can even arrange for locally sourced fresh free range organic eggs to be awaiting your arrival - £1.50 for 6.
Accessibility
Gran Belles is an old house and as such the stairs are quite steep, although my parents, both 80, have no problems with the stairs. There 3 lowish are steps from the car park to the top terrace and then approx 10 steps down to the lower terrace with a hand rail. From the front door, there are two steps up from the street in to the entrance hall. We have had buggies there over the years but it would not suit a wheelchair, for which we are very sorry, but the age of the house is the only reason.
Outside
The lower terrace is decked and overlooked by the kitchen, through big windows. There is a small table and chairs and a chimenea for chilly nights - the stars in Appledore are quite spectacular and we have been known to light a fire and sit out star gazing even at new year! There is a gas BBQ transportable to either deck with care. This upper area is bordered by shrubs and a prolific apple and pear tree. There is also a larger table and chairs with umbrella. Traditional stone walls border each side of the garden and it is a bit of a haven for birds and bees, especially the local seagulls who use the local chimneys to survey their sun soaked territory. The outside is one of our favourite places to be, it is exceptionally peacefull. In the summer we often nod off to the humming of bees in the flowers. And being south facing it gets lots of sun.
Coast/Beach
Appledore has its own beach idea for crabbing and walking along the water's edge when the tide is out. From Irsha Street you walk west to pick up the North Devon coastal path, at the end of the street, across the pebbly beach and past the old lifeboat station toward Northam Burroughs. Wild ponies and sheep roam along the edge of the burroughs which give way to the Royal North Devon Gold Club and then on to the miles and miles of soft golden sand that is Westward Ho! Oh yes there are beaches.
Golf
The Royal North Devon Golf Course is 1.5 miles away in Westward Ho! and is known as the St Andrews of the West.Founded in 1864, it is the oldest golf course in the country and is regarded as the St Andrews of the South. It claims to be as tough as any of the UK’s more famous links layouts and was recently featured in Golf World's 'Top 100 Courses in the World' that a golfer “must play”. Not being golfers ourselves, we must rely on the locals for information on the course - 'RND is pure, raw exhilaration and ultimately the experience of playing a fast running links in a stiff breeze still tests the very best in the game'. That says it all.
Travel
Appledore is remarkably easy to get to as its motorway and main roads all the way, until you hit the last couple of miles. We will email detailed travel documents across. Basically its M5 to Junction 27, A 361 to Barnstaple, then pick up the A39 to Bideford. Approx 1.50/2 hours from Bristol.
Closest airport is Exeter, approx 70 miles away. A car is recommended to get the most out of the area, although there are coaches to Westward Ho! and a very reasonable local taxi service.
Distances
Bideford, the closest town of any size is 4 miles away. Barnstaple is approx 8 miles away. As well as the beaches there are many great places for the kids: Big Sheep at Abbotsham, Milky Way on the A39 just south of Clovelly, Clovelly itself approx 12 miles; Shoppers will love the discount mall Atlantic Village which also combines an adventure playground - approx 5 miles. There are lots of leaflets in the house about what there is to see and do.
Further details
Local shops: Appledore is a small village, so nothing is much of a walk away; there is a new delicatessen/general stores & post office on the Quay; newspaper shop and ships chandlers in Meeting Street. Eating locally: Appledore boasts many pubs and cafes and even a restaurant or two. Pubs like The Beaver and The Royal George are great for families and do kids menus and they are in easy walking distance. The local fish and chip shop - Sylvesters does fab fresh food and nothing beats eating fresh hot fish sitting on the Quay. A new local 'eat in' fish and chip shop called The Royal Plaice has just opened in Meeting Street. The Quay Restaurant is lovely for light lunches and has a great dinner menu. Benson's on the Quay is well known and Schooners is a good coffee shop too. Our all time favourite is Potwollpers at Westward Ho! Lovely Bistro with good varied menu and great specials. Barnstaple offers most types of cuisine. Pubs: Appledore once boasted 17 pubs. Starting close to home, in Irsha street you'll find The Royal George and The Beaver, only 3 & 5 minutes walk from Gran Belles (it may take longer to stagger back). Local pubs:The Seagate Hotel, The Champ, the Coach and Horses and The Royal are all lively venues offering live music, pub food and local ales. A pub crawl in Appledore is a cosy affair as the pubs are all quite close together. There are many good places to eat in North Devon, and nothing is very far away.

About the owner
We've had Gran Belles for ten years. It's been a really important part of our lives, but work demands our time right now, so we enjoy sharing it with like-minded people.Gran Belles is an important place in all our lives, our children enjoyed Appledore; now they return with friends and our grandchildren -it's seen as a haven for friends and family alike. There are pictures of the family all over the house, a gallery of people we've loved and lost as well as those who are still very much part of our lives. Lie in bed and listen to Scunthorpe our 'friendly' seagull whose cry wakes us in the morning, or wander across Northam Burroughs in the early morning - its such a peaceful place to be, all year round. We have many good friends in the village and can help you make this a holiday to remember
Year purchased: 2000
Why the owner chose a home in this location
Family history - grandma emigrated from Appledore when she was 17 to Pill in Nth Somerset and for years we went back to Devon for holidays as a family. We feel so privileged to have been so warmly accepted by the local community and have made many very good friends. What ever the season, Appledore has a beauty of its own; whether its watching the ships sail out on high tide past the Royal George, or walking through the village to get Sunday papers and fresh croissants, its a magical place to be. Appledore has been an important part of our children's and now grand children's holidays. We get back there as often as we can, it's a real haven. We can be as sociable or as hermit-like as we want. Winter or summer Gran Belles and Appledore has a charm all of its own. Please enjoy.
Unique benefits of the property
Gran Belles has always given us a sense of warmth and belonging. The house has a lovely history which is framed and shown on the wall in the hallway. My great grandmother lived in Irsha St (see her picture on the wall) and there are pics of my Mum taken when she was 'courting' and visited Appledore. It's an easy journey and when you arrive you'll take a deep breath and relax feeling truly at home. Everything has been chosen by us with care and love, we hope you like it. From original artworks to books, there are lots of personal things around. I always leave lovely smellies in the bath room and around bedrooms, so if you forget anything please help yourself to what ever you find. Same applies to the kitchen, lots of herbs and spices, pots, pans and gadgets so just enjoy.
