Outside
So much to see...
There are many pubs and restaurants within a one or two minute walk. The Hung, Drawn and Quartered Pub is just across Great Tower Street next to All Hallows (church). If that one doesn't appeal, there are three other British pubs, a French restaurant (Chez Gerard), a Spanish restaurant, an Asian noodle place, a pizza/pasta restaurant, and a Subway sandwich shop all within a lazy 1-2 minute walk.

Special interest holidays
One not to miss is Dickens Inn (a former hanging ground for pirates) at St Katherine's Docks, London's best-kept secret! The docks also host a marina and many quaint cafes, shops and restaurants of all price ranges.

If you choose to walk East about 10-15 minutes, you'll find yourself in London's East End, and perhaps at Brick Lane which is famous for its excellent Indian food! I highly recommend the Jack the Ripper Walking Tour of the East End, held at night and starting from the Tower Hill tube, just about a minute (if that) from the flat.

Also nearby (meaning under 15 minute walk) is St Paul's Cathedral, Tower Bridge, The City (financial district), St Katherine's Dock, Shad Thames (riverwalk area with more restaurants and pubs), London Bridge, Southwark Cathedral, the Borough Market, Sir Francis Drake's ship the Golden Hinde, the HMS Belfast, and Shakespeare's Globe Theatre.

Travel
How to find our apartment from Heathrow and Gatwick Airports
Heathrow and Gatwick airport are each quite a distance outside of central London (Heathrow is 20 miles from the flat; Gatwick is 29 miles). Cab or shuttle services can be taken from each airport, but are relatively costly. The cheapest way to get to the flat from Heathrow airport is to take the London Underground (Tube), which will take you directly from Heathrow to the Tower Hill Tube Station, which is located just 100 yards away.

Distances
If you arrive in London via train, either via the Chunnel from the Continent, or from elsewhere in the UK, traveling to the flat is also very easy. Trains come into London usually at Waterloo, Kings Cross/St Pancras, Victoria or Paddington Stations. From any of these stations, the flat can be reached either via London Underground (Tube), or by simply taking a cab. If you are arriving via train, mail me with your specific station of arrival and I'll provide you with travel options.

Further details
Rental car recommendation and traveling around London from the flat.
A rental car is not only not needed, but is actively discouraged. The flat is located right in the middle of everything, and what you cannot walk to, you can quickly and easily reach via the Tube or bus (there are several bus stops located within a 2 minute walk of the flat, including one for a "hop-on-hop-off" tourist bus service that allows you to see all of the major tourist sites in London at your convenience, and will bring you right back to the flat at the end of the day). In addition, parking is non-existent in central London, and a daily "congestion charge" is charged to anyone driving a vehicle in central London.

Where to Go and What To Do
Local Attractions: Many points of historic interest, including the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, and the Roman Wall. Located in 'The City' or financial district, the area is considered very safe, even for walking around late at night. Due to the flat's proximity to the tube station (and being within Zone One and on the Circle Line), you can hop on and quickly be near any major attraction in central London: Buckingham Palace, Churchill's War Rooms, Whitehall, Parliament, Big Ben, Kensington Palace, etc.

Just across the street, in addition to the Tower of London, is All Hallows by the Tower, a 1,500 year old church that has import for American as well as British history – William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania, was baptized in the church as an infant, and John Quincy Adams, America’s 6th President and son of John Adams, America’s 2nd President, was married there in 1797. Tours of the church, which are offered free of charge, reveal among other things a 2,000 year old Roman road, part of the ancient Roman city of “Londinium”, that ran underneath the present site of the church.
