Our cottages are located on the slopes of an ancient wooded valley so although not very steep, it is not recommended for wheelchair users. However, access via our steps is suitable for elderly guests as handrails and lighting are provided.
We are very proud that over 65% of our guests return to Yapham or recommend us to their friends. We hope that you too will consider staying in this very beautiful, unspoilt area of North Devon.
Outside
Yapham cottages are quite unique. We would challenge you to find a better location in the area, as the views across the valley and towards the sea are magnificent. The cottages are set in landscaped gardens within seven acres of grounds. We have no near neighbours so it is very tranquil at all times, although we are only two miles from the bustling village of Hartland with its shops, schools and pubs. The Hart pub is in the Michelin Guide 2009 and the food here is quite outstanding.
Each cottage has either its own garden or terrace with garden furniture and lovely views of the surrounding countryside and sea.
Guests are most welcome to stroll around our gardens, through our orchard and two-acre woodland and along our drive to look at all the wonderful views that surround us.
We have just made our own compost area so now have compost crocks in each cottage.
Coast/Beach
You can walk to the beach from our cottages and it will take you 45 mins. Alternatively, drive to the nearest beach at Hartland Quay, 10 minutes away.
The Hartland Peninsula has 12 miles of spectacular coastline so lots of beaches to explore, from sandy beaches to rock pools at the Quay and magnificent waves for surfing. Swimming is very safe on lots of the local beaches but the area is also renowned for its surfing. Magnificent rugged cliffs, spectacular waterfalls.

We have several excellent golf courses on our doorstep, from Hartland Forest Golf Club to the oldest links course in England at Westward Ho! One championship course at Saunton Sands plus two further local courses at Bude and Holsworthy.

Guest comments
Our first visit and definitely not our last!(Jan 2010) We stayed in Barley Cottage and did not want to leave it in the morning, as we were so mesmorised by the large variety of birds that visited the bird feeders. The cottage is so beautiful, Jane and Jimmy have thought of everything.
Thank you for the delicious scones and your lovely welcome - we will come again.
Your attention to detail is superb, just like a five star hotel.
What can we say... it just has the WOW factor......
How do you beat this? -comment on Barley Cottage October 2009.
This is our fifth visit and it gets better and better! The cottages and area are just as you said and we loved all the wonderful local walks. We cannot recommend you enough! Every year we come and stay and every year it gets better and better! We have just stayed in Barley Cottage with its new conservatory which is just superb. Thank you again Jane and Jimmy.
Owner profile
About the owner
My name is Jane Young and in February 2000 I fell in love with Yapham and managed to persuade my husband that this is where he should live!
9 years later he has no regrets and of course neither do I.
Previously a teacher in Kent, I wanted to try something different, so we moved here with our cats in July 2000.
I know I become very passionate about whatever I believe in, teaching for most of my life and now running these coastal cottages.
I am also very driven and as a consequence always have projects on the go.
Tourism has become very competitive so it is really important to offer your guests the best you can afford. I get a lot of pleasure in updating the cottages, and seeing the delighted expression on guests' faces when they arrive.
I hope you may be one of them.
Year purchased: 2000
Why the owner chose a home in this location
I had not heard of The Hartland Peninsula, although we moved to Devon as we were always coming on holiday to Dartmoor and the surrounding area, but not North Devon.
We fell in love with the beauty and tranquillity of the area, the clean air, the brilliant starlit skies( there is no pollution) and the stunning coastal scenery.
We have also found the local community very friendly.
In addition this area is still a hidden gem.
Many of our returning guests will not tell others about the area in case we get too booked up and they cannot get a cottage!
We believe you too will love this untouched area of Devon, its remoteness from the hustle and bustle of city life and the peace and serenity that so many of us seek.
Unique benefits of the property
We would challenge you to find a small select complex like ours with such stunning views and with such excellent accommodation with lots of extra personal touches you normally associate with luxury hotels.
You will be surrounded by fields looking towards the sea. The only sounds come from the pheasants and the sheep in the fields and yet we are only two miles from the bustling village of Hartland.
We can offer an excellent range of home cooked food, all you need to do is reheat it.
We also have exclusive use to a private fishing lake, five minutes walk from your cottage.
You can walk to the South West Coast Path from Yapham or visit any number of beautiful gardens or pop down to Cornwall as we are only 9 miles from the border.
