This end-of-terrace house in the heart of Gosport was built around 1840 as a railwayman's cottage along the new line that enabled Queen Victoria to reach her home at Osborne House, on the Isle of Wight, with ease. The railway has long gone, and the line is now a cycle track that leads out to Stokes Bay. The house has been thoughtfully modernised and offers surprisingly spacious, comfortable accommodation with a large lounge/diner, kitchen with breakfast bar, upstairs bathroom with corner bath, large double bedroom, and courtyard garden. All amenities are within easy walking distance including pubs, restaurants and three major supermarkets; there's plenty to explore in Gosport including the Royal Naval Submarine Museum, Stokes Bay with its tennis courts and Adventure Golf, and the ever-changing sights of Portsmouth Harbour. Portsmouth itself is just a five-minute ferry ride away to reach Gunwharf Quays, the Spinnaker Tower, Portsmouth Naval Dockyard, and ferries to the Isle of Wight.

Notes on accommodation
The house has been designed with adults in mind, so sorry - no children.

Accessibility
Gosport is great for walking or cycling because it's entirely flat. The house, however, because it dates from the mid 1800s, has steep cottage-style stairs.

Outside
At the rear there is a walled courtyard garden which has been professionally landscaped with exotic plants, a sandstone patio and railway-sleeper deck area. There is also a courtyard garden at the front with a flowering cherry-tree: beyond that is a grassy bank, a shared parking bay for residents and then the cycle track. Because there's no road at the front of the house (it runs along the side), it's a peaceful setting, though please be aware that this is a house off a typical 'back street' of the town and its surroundings reflect that.

Coast/Beach
Stokes Bay is a 20 minute ride down the cycle path (or less than 10 minutes by car). Portsmouth Harbour, with its ferry to Portsmouth, is 15 minutes on foot or 3 minutes by car. Other beaches, such as Lee-on-the-Solent and Hill Head are a 15 minute drive. Southsea is 30 minutes (walk, ferry then bus) away.

Travel
Car recommended but by no means essential. Nearest airport is Southampton (Eastleigh) which is about 40 minutes away by car. Most convenient railway station is Portsmouth Harbour: from there it's a 5 minute ferry ride to Gosport, then a 3-minute taxi ride to the house. There is also a railway station at Fareham, about a 25 minute drive away. But why not bring your bikes? You could even take them on the ferry to the Isle of Wight for a day.

Distances
Gosport Town Centre: 0.5 miles. Royal Navy Submarine Museum: 1 mile. Explosion Museum: less than a mile. Portsmouth Naval Dockyard (HMS Victory, Warrior etc), and Gunwharf Quays outlet shopping centre: 0.5 miles plus 5 minute ferry ride. Southsea: 12 miles driving but accessible more quickly on foot via ferry/bus. Isle of Wight: you can be in Ryde in less than an hour (walk and ferry). Chichester: regular trains from Portsmouth Harbour (less than an hour).

Further details
The house is ideally placed for easy access to everything you need on holiday. Waitrose, Asda and Morrisons are within easy walking distance, and a Cooperative food store which stays open until late is just at the top of the road (it also has a cashpoint) There are pubs, cafes, restaurants and take-aways all within walking distance, plus an enormous selection at Gunwharf Quays (where there is also a huge multiplex cinema, bowling alley and casino). There is no washing machine at the house, but there are two laundrettes within a five-minute drive. If you want to swim in the sea, play tennis, try your hand at Adventure Golf, sit in a park, watch model-yachting, gaze out at the harbour, cycle, explore naval history, go to church, ice-skate, take a trip to the Island, watch a Pompey match, see a show at Southsea's Kings Theatre or Fareham's Ashcroft arts centre, look at Handel's historic organ, or simply put your feet up, then Eliza Place is the holiday house for you. When you arrive, you'll be met personally by the owner, so you need have no worries about picking up the key, or working out how to operate the central heating, or where the best place is to park the car.

Booking notes
We welcome bookings for a week or multiple weeks. Short breaks (minimum two nights) are also available all year round. We ask that you pay a deposit of £100 when you book, the balance due four weeks before you arrive. Should your plans change and you have to cancel your holiday, we reserve the right to retain your deposit, though we will do our best to re-let the house for that period to enable us to refund you. Short-breaks - payable in full when you book.
