Our beautiful cottage is in a peaceful, rural setting. This part of the Wye valley is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Cottage overlooks our large traditional cider orchard and is ideal for a peaceful country holiday. Access by road is good, being only 10 minutes drive from the M50 motorway. The Cottage is five miles from Hereford and seven miles from Ross on Wye, 30 miles from Hay on Wye and within easy reach of the Malvern Hills, Forest of Dean and the Brecon Beacons. It is ideally sited for local events including the Ledbury petry festival and the Hay on Wye Jazz and Book festivals. Canoeing on the Wye, game and coarse fishing on the rivers Wye and Lugg, sports centres, swimming, horse riding and trekking are all available locally. Walkers have the Wye Valley Walk (five minutes from the Cottage), the Brecon Beacons, the Malverns, and lots of local footpaths to explore. The area has many pubs which serve good food. Our visitors tend to come back year after year.

The cottage is fully central heated and in addition has two woodburning stoves. All fuel is included in the rental.Children are welcome and a cot is avilable on request.

Accessibility
As this is an old cottage with steep stairs and level changes between rooms, regrettably it is not suitable for wheelchair users or people with mobility difficulties.

Outside
The cottage has a flower, herb and vegetable garden (guests are welcome to vegetables in season) with a woodshed, a sloping lawn and a paved patio area with a table and small barbecue. The garden enjoys views of the orchard and the surrounding countryside and there is a bench down by the orchard. In season there are plums and greengages.

Travel
Fownhope is about ten minutes drive from the end of the M50 motorway at Ross. A car is recommended, although there is a regular bus service from the village to Hereford and the village shops offer pretty well everything you need. The nearest train station is Hereford.
The nearest airport is Bristol (64 miles). East Midlands Airport is a two hour drive and Birmingham is (73 miles) an hour and a half away.

Distances
The Cottage is 1/4 mile from the village of Fownhope. The village has a late opening, well stocked shop,an excellent butcher, hairdresser, two pubs, a medical centre and a church (C. of E.).
Hereford, 6 miles, has good shops, the Cathedral with chained library and Mappa Mundi, leisure centre and pool, and a new hospital with an excellent A & E dept! Ross on Wye and Ledbury, 5 miles, are both charming market towns with interesting shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants and swimming pool.

Further details
Hay on Wye is 30 miles away and hosts both the well known jazz and book festivals. The Forest of Dean is 10 miles, Gloucester 25 miles, Worcester 25 miles, Malvern and its hills 20 miles.
The Wye is a mile from the Cottage and the Lugg is three miles away. The Wye is renowned for fishing (lots of day ticket stretches) and canoing. In fact it's the only British river you can canoe all the way down.
All the major supermarkets can be found in Hereford. Ross has a big Morrisons and a little Sainsbury. Ledbury has a Tesco and a Somerfield.
Ross has a big car boot sale at the Cattle Market on Sunday mornings, open from about 8 a.m.

Owner profile

About the owner
We have owned this cottage for nearly 20 years. We are professional people (psychotherapist and electronic designer) and my family lives in Herefordshire. The cottage is our second home and we aren't very commercial about letting it. Because of this it is probably a lot more homely than most holiday houses. Anyone who visits can use everything. We do all maintenance, cleaning etc ourselves and Steve, my husband renovated the cottage, which was a damp, dark hovel with no drainage and one electric light when we bought it. The traditional cider orchard is mentioned has been there since at least the middle of the 19th century and is the largest remaining orchard in the village and we have replanted it with local cider varieties.

Year purchased: 1991

Why the owner chose a home in this location
I discovered Herefordshire in 1980 when I was working in a therapeutic community with adolescents. We used to have two week activity camps with small groups and I did the canoeing camp, travelling the Wye from Hay to Chepstow, camping in fields adjacent to the river. The area is unspoilt and there is still real countryside. The diversity of wildlife is wonderfully rich. We have rivers and forests and meadows and ancient orchards, which sustain the wealth of plants and animals that make this area so special to me. I think the best things about our cottage are its peace and the richness of the natural world there. We have a wonderful diversity of birds which come to our bird feeders. Buzzards and woodpeckers nest in the ash trees in the orchard and groups of deer go through regularly.

Unique benefits of the property
People say they like the fact that although it is peaceful and quiet, the village is in easy walking distance and there are so many brilliant walks; and places visit that are a short drive away. Others like the style. It doesn't have matching bedspreads and curtains and the crockery is stuff that I've bought over the years because I like it. Nothing matches, but there is plenty of it, unlike some holiday places where you get 6 cups and 2 small pans! If you wanted to cook for 10, you could very easily. We leave all our food for people to use. Some do and some don't, but it's there if you want it. Guests like the woodburners and the unlimited supply of logs. Our guests tend to come back and although we don't keep a visitors' book, preferring to write notes, we do get great feedback.
