Warm, comfortable converted stone-built barn, just one, with the owners farmhouse well separated, 30 metres away. Approached by the perimeter track of an old airfield with great views of the twin peaks of Cornwall from the top of our track. Rough Tor is 3 miles away, on still nights in spring you can visit the marsh to hear the drumming of Cornish snipe and the weird call of the peewit. The track then drops below the airfield, beside a stream and over moorland with grazing horses and sheep to Butterwell, once an old smallholding, in a stand of trees and grassy banks. Feels remote, just 15 minutes drive from the A30 at Launceston. Children are always welcome here and toys and books are provided, as are garden seats and benches for those who would rather not run around. Logs for the wood burning stove are provided at no extra charge and bedlinen is provided. Great bird-watching, walking, swimming and surfing - beaches at Trebarwith Strand, Crackington Haven, Bossinney, Bude, Polzeath.

Accessibility
We are very sorry but the building is structurally unsuitable for wheelchair use.

Outside
Large grassy lawn with tall trees and soft grass, plenty of room to run around. February is snowdrop time at Butterwell with clusters of snowdrops on the mossy banks, on the lawn and tucked under shrubs. This year (2010) we have the delight of new groups of different snowdrop (Galanthus)species and named varieties, already in flower after planting in the green (just after flowering) in March 2009. Camellias, fuschias. Two wooden folding chairs, two soft folding chairs and a table are provided, plus a wooden bench in a sheltered alcove . Plenty of space for barbecues, flat stones provided for protection of lawn, bring your own disposable BBQ, we will recycle it. There are acres of moorland to roam from the cattle grid at the bottom of the drive. Parking for 2 cars. We ask our visitors to please abstain from smoking in the Barn as Butterwell is a no-smoking zone. It is easier for you to book a cottage that accepts smokers as there is no provision for smoking under shelter outside.

Coast/Beach
Trebarwith Strand (S of Tintagel, west-facing, great for BBQs, surf, swim, rock pools, cafe, pub with food, sunsets and views) and Bossinney Haven (W of Boscastle, steep rocky path, cliffs where fulmars nest on easily seen ledges and house martins nest on rock faces, one of Cornwall's hidden gems), both 4 miles, 15 min drive, best at low tide. Crackington Haven (surf, swim, sunsets, BBQs, 20 mins drive) Bude 30 mins drive; Polzeath 30 mins - Camel estuary, ferry Rock-Padstow, sometimes dolphins!

Golf
Nearest golf course is Bowood Park at Camelford, 4 miles. 15 miles to lovely course at Rock, over sand dune area at edge of River Camel, passing legendary St Enedocs church, small and cute with a crooked spire and poet John Betjeman's grave. Renowned course at St Mellion about 25 miles to the south.

Travel
Newquay and airport 30 miles, Plymouth airport and ferry port 30 miles. Beach four miles away - downhill on the way there, uphill on the way home! Use of car recommended but it is possible without if you wish to walk or bring bicycles and to use taxis. We will help with occasional lifts, the nearest bus stop is a mile away. Nearest train station Bodmin Parkway 20 miles or Exeter St Davids 50 miles, car hire available at both.

Distances

Further details
Camelford (10 minutes drive) has Co-op supermarket (bread baked daily) open 7am to 11 pm every day including Sundays; banks with cash machines; greengrocer, butcher; post office, 2 pubs which provide food, cafes, Indian restaurant and fish and chip shop. Also, leisure centre with indoor swimming pool. Further afield are many places to eat and explore. Cornwall has coast on three sides and all of the coast is encircled by the south-west coastal footpath with spectacular views and varied walking. Bodmin Moor stretches south from Davidstow - we could drop you off at historic Jamaica Inn to walk the 6 miles back to Butterwell. The Rising Sun on the way to Altarnun has a real ales and good food, as do many other pubs within a few miles. Fresh local fish can be bought from the fish vaults at the quaint village of Port Isaac, about 7 miles away, or at Widemouh Bay, on the coast road to Bude. The Farm Shop at St Endellion on the way to Rock and Polzeath has local farm produce and many delicious local foods, a cafe, space outside for children to play, Pick-Your-Own strawberries and other fruits in season.
The starlings are back for the winter! They have roosted in the same area a few miles away, for the last three years. Sometimes they move roosting site each year. From mid-October to March, each evening before sunset they gather in their thousands, more than half a million at their peak, whirling and swirling like swarming bees, swooping down to the fields and the moor to feed before nightfall then rising again into weird shapes, not unlike shoals of fish, wheeling and turning together, anxious to avoid the predators that await their arrival each evening. At best, there may be a peregrine falcon or a sparrowhawk darting in to catch their supper - this can cause amazing swirls in the sky. As sunset approaches, great swarms rise up from the fields and head for the woods where they roost, falling suddenly silent as the sun sets.

Deposit of 40% of full price required on booking, please, by cheque or bank transfer. Balance becomes due 6 weeks before arrival date. £50 reduction for 2-week booking April - end October.

Guest comments
This has been one of the nicest holidays we've had for a long time. Barn is lovely and welcoming as were Sue and Arthur. We discovered some new places - the cliff-top walk at Bossinney and walks around Daymer Bay were especially beautiful. We fell in love with Port Isaac and the fish from the vaults there was wonderful. To top it all, the weather was lovely. All in all, a lovely comfortable stay and we hope to return. Best wishes, Liz and Jon 17 April 2008

The barn was lovely and cosy, beautiful views. Thank you Sue for making the barn so homely - we have decided we like the log-burner and have copied Arthur's lighting instructions in case we get one of our own - worked every time! Nigel, Jean and Ellie. 3 April 2008

A second visit to this wonderful little spot,, hidden away in Cornwall. A fabulous destination for youngsters (and their parents) where the details are well thought out to deliver a real home from home. Magic Cottage is the kids' nickname! Ken, Di, J, A. 24 March.

Owner profile

About the owner
We love living here and our own holidays are often cottage holidays. We are always interested in seeing other holiday cottages and barn conversions - often those in wild and empty places. We believe that holidays are very special and do our best to describe our barn so that only those who will love to be here will choose to come. If you like the sea or the moors or both, they are within easy reach of Butterwell - one of us goes running on the moors, the other swims in the sea for most of the year - there is a good choice of beaches for most conditions within 15 to 30 minutes drive...and of course, plenty more beyond! We are very interested in wildlife and the natural world around us - garden plants and wildflowers, trees, birds, bats, animals, sea-life, clouds. BScs in Ecology and Biology.

Year purchased: 1998

Why the owner chose a home in this location
Butterwell feels remote and cut off from the world, an hour's fast drive from Exeter on the excellent dual carriageway A30, connecting to the A30/303/M3 route to London and the east, and the M5/M4/M6 Motorway system to Bristol, the north and east. Just 20 minutes from the A30, it is easy to drive west and south to other parts of Cornwall. Better still, walk out from here onto continuous moorland or a 20 minutes drive will find one of many rocky coves or sandy beaches, all linked by a coast path with glorious sea views. When you arrive please take care at lambing time, lest a bouncing baby lamb jumps in your path. Reach the boulders which mark our track and drop down to the Barn and our house in the trees below. Up the drive, small stream beside, honeysuckle in the hedge. Welcome!

Unique benefits of the property
Lovely views from the upstairs windows, on three sides of the large, light living space. North from the window through which hay was once hoisted, see the garden with swing and hammock slung from trees and a wide swathe of grass. Beyond, farmers fields and overgrown beech hedges, a distant church tower tucked below the horizon, leading up to more trees and about three pinpricks of light on a dark night. South, through an elegant arch of pitch pine woodwork, trees and shrubs, a bit of a field with lambs in spring, our stone-built house with rampant climbing hydrangea, and the old stone built woodshed, covered in ivy. West .... The Sunset! Whatever time of year, watch the sun drop below the edge of the moor, a mix of mature trees and open moorland, maybe with a tableau of grazing horses.
