Haldon Belvedere (Lawrence Castle) is a grade II* listed historic triangular tower built in 1788 in memory of Major-General Stringer Lawrence a commander of the British forces in India in the 1750's. It stands in an elevated position overlooking the cathedral city of Exeter, the river Exe estuary and Dartmoor. The building was restored in 1994 by the Devon Historic Buildings Trust to illustrate the splendour of its many features such as the marble fireplaces, gothic windows, ornate plasterwork, solid mahogany panelled flooring and the cantilevered spiral staircase. The miniature Ballroom on the first floor is a magnificent example of 18th century opulence and is a popular venue for civil marriages. This is an excellent Special Occasion location. Short breaks (min 3 nights) a speciality.

Changeover day
Changeover days are usually Mondays and Fridays. Access to the apartment will be from 4pm on day of arrival and guests must vacate the premises by 10am on day of departure.

Bedrooms: The sleeping area is incorporated in the main central living room and consists of a large king size bed which can be converted into two singles if required.
Bathrooms: Circular bathroom with bath/shower over and wc.
Kitchen: Circular fully fitted kitchen comprising, oven, hob, microwave, fridge, freezer and dishwasher
Living Rooms: Main central living room has a lounge area with leather chairs, TV, DVD player and radio cassette player. The eating area has period table and chairs. Panoramic views from all windows.
Other: The roof terrace offers the most stunning uninterrupted views over Devon countryside and beyond.
The building's other rooms are not included in the hire.
Cleaning/towels/
linen/maid service:
Towels, linen, crockery, cutlery are all included. For stays over 3 nights a maid service is available mid term.
Utility costs are included in the hire charge.

 

Notes on accommodation
The accommodation offered is the apartment only and while guests can access other areas in the building these are not available for guests to use without the owners permission.
The belvedere is a very popular venue for Civil Marriages which may be taking place during your stay. However, no evening functions will be allowed without guests prior approval.

Accessibility
Because of the spiral staircase, those with mobility problems may have difficulty tackling the 66 steps to the Apartment.

Outside
5 acres of wooded walkways are incorporated in the grounds which can also be accessed by members of the public at any time. Nearby, there are extensive forest walks and cycle trails in the Haldon Forest Park.

Coast/Beach
Beaches at Dawlish, Teignmouth, Exmouth and other coastal areas are all within easy reach by car as is Dartmoor and the cathedral city of Exeter which is about 15 minutes drive away.
The Jurassic Coastline at Charmouth is about a 40 minute drive away.
The Eden Project is about an hour drive from the belvedere.

Golf
Teign Valley Golf and Hotel, Teignmouth GC, Exeter Golf and Country Club, Dawlish Warren GC, Stover GC all within 20 minute drive with Torquay GC, Crediton Downes GC, Woodbury Park GC and East Devon GC within 40 minutes.

Travel
Exeter International Airport is a 30 minute drive away and Exeter St Davids Railway Station is 20 minutes by car.
Use of a car is really essential as local bus service are very limited.

Distances
The village of Dunchideock is a 5 minute walk away where a hotel offers non residents facilities. Other local villages are Doddiscombsleigh with its famous Nobody Inn, Ashton with Post Office/store and pub, Ide with Post Office/store and pubs, Trusham with good character pub and Chudleigh with shops and pubs are all within easy driving distance.

Further details
There are plenty of village pubs serving good food locally and the city of Exeter and the nearby coastal resort of Torquay offer all visitor/tourist amenities including good restaurants, night clubs, casino and theatres.

Start date determines the price category.
