Notes on accommodation
The village Post Office across the road is very handy for essentials (wine, marmalade, toilet rolls etc). It is also a Lloyds and Barclays bank. Put the postcode in to Google maps and 'pull the man' to the pin. Scroll round opposite the post office and our garden, parking etc is where the red car is, through the large wooden gate. The open moor is approximately ten minutes walk away, where you can wander freely. The Northmore Arms Public House is 0.7 miles down the road which serves a range of local ales and ciders amongst many other favoured tipples and delicious home-cooked meals. Chagford is about four miles to the south east and offers a range of shops and eateries, including some wonderful pubs and two enormous hardware shops. Okehampton is a larger town about six miles to the north east of Throwleigh with supermarkets and a cinema.

Accessibility
Unfortunately the property is not suitable for wheelchair users as there are four steps down and one up to the front door and three small steps up to the back door. However, the steps should not be a problem to most other users.

Outside
Outside the back door is a decking area with table and seating for al fresco eating. The garden is fully enclosed with bushes on three sides, a shed containing a barbecue with tools and room for guests bikes etc. There is also a gate separating the road from the private parking for one vehicle. There are many different species of birds in and around the garden and guests are invited to fill the bird feeders to encourage them to visit.

Coast/Beach
Beaches are approximately 1 hour away by car. However, there are many places to swim in the rivers and pools on Dartmoor. There is nothing to beat wild swimming on Dartmoor!

Travel
This cottage is in a small village in the north east section of the Dartmoor National Park and therefore some form of transport is necessary.
Exeter airport is about 30 minutes to the east and Plymouth is about 1 hour south. The cottage is approximately 5 minutes from the A30, so perfect for getting on to a fast road to explore further afield.

Distances
Apart from the village shop/post office which is about 30 seconds away, the nearest shop suitable for stocking the cupboards is about 3 miles away.
Throwleigh village is only 3 miles from the A30, approx 4 miles from Chagford and about 6 miles from Okehampton. Exeter is 25 minutes to the east. The open moor is about 15 minutes walk. Dartmoor has so many places of interest, all within easy reach by car and many places close enough to walk to.

Further details
There are many places to eat or get refreshments including some wonderful pubs, the local being the Northmore Arms which has a range of ales, ciders, wines etc. and also fantastic food. It also has a garden to use when the weather permits.
Dartmoor is famous for its many Tors which must be explored to enjoy them to their utmost. Children should try out letterboxing which is great fun, so find out more about this fun activity as soon as possible. Ancient ruins, stone circles, standing stones, hut circles and village ruins dating back thousands of years are all to be found in Dartmoor. The rivers are great for swimming or paddling, fishing, rock jumping or just for cooling your feet after a long trek.

Booking notes
Bookings can be by phone or email and will be confirmed upon receipt of the deposit of £100, with the balance to arrive one calendar month before the holiday start date. Bookings within one month of stay, please pay in full at time of booking. A breakages/additional cleaning deposit of £100 is required with the payment which will be returned once the cottage has been checked after your stay if everything is in order.

Guest comments
I cannot believe how peaceful it was. I was frightened of feeling 'cut off' but realised I really enjoyed the peace and quiet and now want to live there forever! We loved it! Thank you,
S. Wood

How wonderful to stay in a cottage with comfortable beds! 'Tucksmoor' had everything we wanted - the kitchen is ideal with all the necessary gizmos to make cooking after a long walk as easy as possible - we especially found the slow cooker useful. The log burner was lovely and we found we did not use the TV as we all talked more, read more and enjoyed the board games and jigsaws. I was the Ludo champion! Very friendly locals at the Pub and great real ale. We can't wait to go back.

Owner profile

About the owner
My wife Gemma and I have five children. I am self employed and Gemma has returned to work now our children are older. We have always enjoyed holidaying in self catering cottages where we could 'do our own thing'. As children, we both had holidays with our families in Devon, especially Dartmoor so it is very much a favourite of ours. We prefer places where we can please ourselves and get away from the hussle and bustle of everyday life.

Year purchased: 2010

Why the owner chose a home in this location
We wanted to have a property in the Dartmoor National Park, but ease of access was very important. So when we found this cottage in Throwleigh it was perfect as it is only about 2.5 miles from the A30 yet it feels as if it is deep in the countryside. The open moor is easily accessible with its ancient history and great walks with beautiful views and Chagford which is one of our favourite stannery towns is about 4 miles away.

Unique benefits of the property
Being on the edge of the village and overlooking the countryside, this cottage is so peaceful. Many cottages we viewed before buying this one, did not have their own off road parking nor a garden, both of which we believe are very important. We also wanted a real fire or log burner to give the cottage character.
