Owner profile
About the owner
We are a wife and husband team. I deal with the bookings side of things and my husband is in charge of all things maintenance. When we are not at the cottage, I work as a volunteer counsellor for a university counselling service. My husband is a heating engineer and is always busy. He can't work without a cup of tea but prefers Earl Grey to good old Yorkshire tea, which is too strong for his liking. My family are very much rooted in North Yorkshire and my husband, whilst hailing from London, feels very much at home despite not liking the tea!
Why the owner chose a home in this location
It was love at first sight when we saw the cottage. We had been toying with the idea of buying a holiday cottage and were excited when we chanced upon the for sale sign. We rang up and made an appointment to view the very next day. There are lots of things we love about the cottage - the location, in Masham itself, is great. We don't need to use the car if we don't want to. We can stroll to the square for our morning coffee and browse round the speciality shops before setting off on one of the many walks surrounding the town. We never tire of driving down the hill into Masham and spying the tall church spire knowing we are nearly there! It is an easy place to get to from north or south - just eight miles from the A1 and provides a really convenient base for exploring the dales and beyond.
Unique benefits of the property
The cottage has a very homely and comfortable feel about it. The most frequent comment from guests is just how cosy it is. The cottage is compact but this is part of its charm for us. It has lots of original features such as the lovely big fireplace in the living room where we have put a log burner and the thick curvy walls. We are also very lucky in that our neighbours are lovely and in general we find Masham residents to be very friendly folk. We clean and maintain the cottage ourselves and do our best to ensure standards are the highest that we can make them. We know ourselves how awful it is to arrive on holiday and have to start cleaning the fridge or worry about how clean the beds are. We were thrilled this year therefore to attain the Quality in Tourism Gold Award for our efforts.
