Owner profile
About the owner
I grew up in Broadstairs and went on to study German at the University of Kent in Canterbury. I married an Austrian and have been living in Austria for the last 27 years and have 2 sons, one of whom went back to England and is presently training to be a helicopter pilot in the RAF. I teach English as a foreign language in Innsbruck and my husband teaches Electrical Engineering. I love Broadstairs and I couldn't bear to part with my family home, so I rent it out in order to finance the upkeep.
Year purchased: 1960's
Why the owner chose a home in this location
I didn't buy the property my mother did. My mother was a Broadstairs girl and after roaming the world (Canada/Los Angeles) she went back home to Broadstairs. I love the house and the area with a passion and can't get back often enough, although I live in one of the most beautiful places on earth. I love mountains but I also love the sea and the live music pub culture of Broadstairs, which doesn't exist in Austria.
Unique benefits of the property
The house is very quiet, as it is in a cul-de-sac and extremely sunny, so it's lovely to sit out in the garden of an afternoon or just enjoy the last of the sun`s rays of an evening. It doesn't cool off as fast as it does in the mountains where I live near Innsbruck, so you can sit outside and chat into the night. I have just built a small conservatory to prolong this even more, and to give smokers somewhere to smoke, as the house is a non-smoking house. Some of the pieces of furniture in the house belonged to my grandmother and are getting on for a 100 years old. This is why the granddaughter of one of my guest families who came for 3 weeks a year for 10 years always called my house the doll's house.
