Outside
The garden is very large, with table and chairs for eating out and a fire basket so you can keep warm. We provide hammocks so you can relax - there are apples on the orchard trees in Autumn.
Coast/Beach
The nearest beach (which is usually deserted) is a ten minute drive away down a winding lane. There are no amenities there, but it's great for dog-walking. Silecroft beach is about the same distance by car, but it's more sandy and slightly busier. It has toilets.
Travel
A car is essential for staying here. There is a good train service from Bootle Station (15 minutes' walk down the lane) which connects to Carlisle, but timing connections needs care. Nearest airport is Manchester (2 1/2 hours). The M6 is an hour's drive in either north or south.

Further details
Bootle village is a real local community. The local shop is well-stocked (and a hive of local gossip!), there is an excellent farm-shop and cafe, and the village butcher (Bewley's) is famed for his sausages - though there is fierce competition with Woodall's in the next village. Black Combe is one of the easiest peaks to climb, but offers superlative views of The Isle Of Man and Scotland on clear days. The summer season brings a host of local festivals and fairs, all of which offer good entertainment.

About the owner
About the Coopers
There are 6 of us: Kevin, Hilary, twins Rebekah and Naomi, and two dogs, Kendra and Jack. We have lived at Town Head Cottage for over two years, until work took us away to the opposite side of the country. During school term times we live and work in a boarding school, which means living on site. Bootle is still our home, though, and we are regular holiday visitors.
Our home is a great place to relax and enjoy the quieter side of the Lake District. You can easily walk to the fells or the beach, mountain biking opportunities are plentiful, and you'll find the locals very friendly.
We're only half an hour's drive from Wastwater (recently voted Britain's best view) or Coniston and ten minutes from beautiful Ravenglass.
Year purchased: 2007
Why the owner chose a home in this location
We moved as a family to Bootle in 2007 and never wanted to leave. Sadly, our work has taken us elsewhere for the moment, though we hope we'll be able to return one day. We love the area because you have the best of both worlds: the sea and the fells, and it's never packed with tourists, even in peak season. There are loads of places to walk where you won't see another soul. The village is friendly too, with good amenities for everyday life - it's still a proper, working community and plenty of people have lived there all their lives. The tourist sights are quite close, though, if you fancy a day out. The roads are generally quiet here, so distances seem less.
Unique benefits of the property
This is a homely, comfortable house - we've lived in it! It also has plenty of character -it's a proper old cottage. We hope it feels like home, and you'll feel relaxed here. Dogs are welcome - we have two - but we do ask that you keep them downstairs and don't let them sit on the furniture. We have a supply of fleece blankets if you need to have them on your knee! The road does go past one side of the house, but the garden is tucked away behind other houses, and most other rooms do not overlook the road. The small double room is the only bedroom which overlooks the road. It's never bothered us, but we thought we should mention it. In good weather, the garden is a great place to chill out, but we think you'll also want to explore the area - there's so many unspoilt places to discover.
