Further details
The traditional seaside resort of Bude, with its three miles of sandy beaches, rock pools and Atlantic breakers, has numerous facilities for beach lovers, surfers and coastal walkers. The Bude Canal to Launceston was opened in the 1820s and today is used for fishing, boating and walking, along the Bude Canal Trail. The history of Bude and its canal can be explored in the Bude-Stratton Museum which stands on the canal side near the sea lock in the Canal Company’s former smithy. The annual Jazz Festival takes place in August and September each year, and is one of the leading festivals of its kind in Britain.
The South West Coast Path passes through the town. To the north is Duckpool Beach, at the shore end of the Coombe Valley, and a firm favourite with surfers.
Morwenstow, 5 ½ miles north of Bude off the A39 is worth a visit. It’s a marvellous place to watch the changing moods of the ocean as it’s located on the harshest stretch of the north Cornwall coast.
North of the village is Welcombe Mouth, a good spot for surfing. Welcombe and Marsland Valleys Nature Reserve, set in the forested valley slopes, is a haven for butterflies.
Brocklands Adventure Park in Kilkhampton, 5 miles from Bude, provides a day out for all the family. Leaflets are available in the gym. Two miles north of Kilkhampton is Killarney Springs, another family fun park with rides, boating, nature trails and so on.
Widemouth Bay lies 3 miles south of Bude and visitors are attracted by the wide curving bay of flat sand. Its north and south beaches are both backed by low cliffs and grassy fields. There is a car park, loos, shops and surf hire, making it a popular holiday beach.
The romantic remains of Tintagel are set on a wild and windswept headland that juts out into the Atlantic. Be prepared to climb the wooden stairway of some 300 steps to the Island that is the legendary birthplace of King Arthur.
