This boutique thatched cottage is located in the quintessential Portman estate village of Durweston, opposite the church, in the heart of dorset. A dreamy 18th century cottage described by 'Dorset Life' as 'the stuff of chocolate boxes'. Perfectly located to explore the coast and stunning country side yet the fabulous Georgian market town of Blandford Forum (noted in Thomas Hardy's book)is 10 mins away. Visit Cranborne Chase, Dorchester, Shaftesbury, the New Forest and Lulworth Cove. The cottage boasts a wealth of original features including a large inglenook and is attractive furnished with a bespoke kitchen. Decorated beautifully earth tones & natural linens (used for magazine shoots). Luxury touches include wifi,ipod dock, scented candles ,fresh cut flowers, Egyptian cotton linen and squigy pillows! Guests enjoy the lovely walks on the estate and visiting the local gastro pubs on the doorstep. The private cottage style garden is planted with cherry blossom, roses & fresh herbs.

Accessibility
It should be noted that the building is listed and therefore the ceiling height upstairs are low as are some doorways. However the rooms are very spacious and well laid out. The stairs are typical of such a cottage having narrow treads and there are steps up to the front door,from the kitchen to the garden from the patio to the garden.
Outside
A nice fenced private rear "cottage"style garden, with pots of fresh herbs to pick, a bird nesting house and developing the planting with cherry blossom, spring bulbs, herbs roses. There is a patio area, table (seats 6) and level lawn. A new shed houses provides space to store bikes, barbecue and an outdoor game of garden jenga suited to all ages. Parking - there is good parking to the front of the house and a small graveled parking area to the side of the house (we are lucky to have a nearby fenced village green with tennis courts, playing fields and climbing frames for public use). There are lovely walks from the door step around the Portman Estate where you can see lots of wildlife, Bluebells, Snowdrops and wild flowers.
Coast/Beach
Within 35 minutes drive is the beautiful Jurassic Coast, including Lulworth Cove, the Poole Sandbanks beach and Shell Bay. Poole and it's enormous natural harbour and Brownsea Island are within 30 mins driving, where kite and windsurfing are very popular.
Golf
Ashley Wood Club 8 mins drive. A friendly and welcoming golf club, originally established over 100 years ago, which offers very good facilities situated in a beautiful part of Dorset. Rushmoor Club 1/2 hour drive. Bulbury Woods Club 1/2 hour drive.
Cycling: You can call the local hire centre and they will deliver bicycles to No 53 Durweston for the duration of your stay and pick them up when you depart.
Special interest holidays
No 53 is less than 1/2 mile from Bryanston School. The school hosts Dorset Opera and the Slade School of Art Summer Programs. Popular Local attractions/activities include BBW Clay Shooting company, The Lamer Tree Gardens, Kingstone Lacy National Trust, Salisbury Cathedral, Gorcombe Farm Shop, The Tank Museum, Monkey World and Jurassic Coast. Excellently placed for walking (with good buggy access) and cycling routes. Ideal location if visiting Dorset Steam Fair and The Larmer Tree Festival of Music, The Dorset Opera.
Travel
Southampton Airport (1 hour drive) is well served by Flybe from many UK and European destinations. The closest railway station is Salisbury (30 minutes drive). Use of car makes life easier, although there are bus routes available starting from Blandford (1 mile away).
Distances
The cathedral town of Salisbury is 30 minutes drive. The medieval town of Shaftesbury is 20 minutes drive. Further afield lie Lyme Regis and the spa town of Bath (both 1 hour's drive). London is best reached by train from Salisbury, where the journey is 80 minutes. Local attractions - National Trust Kingston Lacy, Monkey World, Hall and Woodhouse Brewery Visitors Center, Tank Museum.

Nearby Stourpaine (just less than 1 mile away) has a fantastic Pub, village store and Post Office, accessible by a picturesque footpath if you wish to walk. Blandford Forum (10 mins drive) has several banks and 2 large supermarkets, including markets most days in the town square. If you are in search of the quintessential English country pub, the Talbot Inn at Iwerne Minster (5 miles), the Anchor at Shapwick (6 miles) and the Museum Inn in Farnham (10 miles) are highly recommended all . Milton Abbey is 10 miles away with it's wonderful Abbey and it's famous lined street of thatched cottages. Dorset is the only county in England with no motorway and lends itself to those who wish to explore either on foot or in the car. An ordnance survey map (supplied with the house) is a must if you wish to get to those areas unmarked on the larger road maps.

Why the owner chose a home in this location
Set within the Crown Portman Estate. Dorset is a fantastic place to explore. (Shaftesbury, Salisbury and Jurassic Coast). The landscape is breath taking and surrounding village pubs are excellent.
The cottage has been selected as an example of outstanding architectural interest, with some amazing original features. It makes the perfect getaway at any time of year. The Interior has been selected by Country Homes and Interiors Magazine for a photo shoot.)
It also makes a fantastic romantic retreat for a couple and we are not surprised that during our first 12 months of trading we have welcomed ten honeymoon couples.
It seems to suit couples with a young baby as they have easy access to walks with the buggy along the Portman Estate drive.
