The Volnay is situated close to a shingle beach, in the centre of the working fishing hamlet of Porthoustock. The area is popular with fisherman and divers, who launch off the beach to dive the manacle rocks. Porthoustock has a unique rustic, untouristy charm and on either side of the entrance to the bay are the remnants of past and present quarry workings. The beach is stony, the water is clean and swimming is lovely! The wreck of the Volnay which was sunk in 1917, is just off Porthoustock on the Manacle rocks, hence the name of the property. There are great coastal and country walks from Porthoustock. The footpath to St. Keverne is delightful. Nearby water sports include windsurfing at Coverack and a dive centre at Porthkerris Porthoutstock is just under a mile from St Keverne with its famous Church, whose spire was used as a land mark for ships coming into Falmouth Bay. St Keverne has two pubs, an organic restaurant, small supermarket, butchers, post office and newsagent.

Owner profile
About the owner
My favourite TV program is Grand Designs. Five years ago after getting planning permission I knocked down my house and rebuilt it. It's my very modest 'Grand Design'. It was a very steep learning curve but more to the point I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I got the bug. Since then I have been knocking down, building and refurbishing properties. I have 4 holiday properties all different. This one was my labour of love (a lot of hard manual work). I hope you will agree it was worth it.
Year purchased: 2008
Why the owner chose an apartment in this location
I have been very fortunate to have lived and grown up on the Lizard Peninsula. Often referred to as "Cornwall's Best Kept Secret". This is indicative of the number of visitors that return year after year only to end up purchasing a property in the area to retire. Many returning visitors have become friends.
Porthoustock is not really a picture postcard cove, more a working cove which has a certain non touristic charm. Porthoustock is quiet, yet there is always something happening on the beach; children playing, swimming, fishing, diving, walkers passing through on the coastal footpath. Life is always unhurried. The more time spent at this little fishing hamlet the more it grows on you.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time spent refurbishing the property, the neighbours being particularly frien
Unique benefits of the property
The Volnay is an older property which I have tried to give a light airy feel, yet still retain the character of the property. The Lower Flat with the conservatory and tiled floors has a warm and airy slightly continental flavour. The Upper Flat with it's uneven cob wall's, view's and log burning stove has a warm homely feel.
Situated in the fishing hamlet of Porthoustock on the east side of the Lizard Peninsula. The area encompasses many differing and varied landscapes, seclude coves, beaches, fishing villages and stunning coastal scenery. Great for coastal footpath walking (also many interesting inland paths as well). The area is good for golf, fishing and is a haven for water sports. Enviable Gulf Stream Climate. What better place to spend an enjoyable holiday at any time of year ?
