This characterful holiday home is set on the slopes of the Slad Valley, in the heart of the Cotswold Hills, one of the most picturesque and unspoilt locations in England. It is available for holiday rentals and short breaks all year. The hamlet of Slad, immortalised by Laurie Lee in 'Cider with Rosie', boasts glorious views, endless great walks and one of the best pubs in the Cotswolds, The Woolpack, just 300 metres from the chapel. Built in 1865 and thoroughly renovated in 2008, the converted chapel is stylishly furnished without being contrived. It offers very comfortable holiday accommodation for up to 10 guests, and is ideal for two families to share. Home comforts include a large and very well equipped kitchen-dining room, a huge open-plan living space with interesting furniture, a wood-burning stove and separate TV/DVD areas for you and the kids. The beds are all new, with high quality mattresses and bedlinen. In the garden an elevated terrace overlooks the enclosed trampoline.

Notes on accommodation
The Old Chapel is ideal for one or two families, with plenty of different areas so it doesn't feel crowded and lots for children to do. A full-size trampoline (enclosed), a separate children's sitting room with Playstation and DVD, selection of children's games, films and books. The property has central heating included in the rental price, and a new wood-burning stove that's very easy to use - we supply you with wood.

Accessibility
The property is set on a steep slope with a 20 metre path up to the property that requires a good degree of mobility. And with all the bedrooms on the upper level unfortunately it would not be suitable for wheelchair users.

Outside
Sloping gardens to the front and side (approx 1/3 acre), with drystone wall and gates to the front. A large, wrap-round terrace overlooks the graveyard across the valley on one side and the garden on the other. Equipped with garden bench, two picnic tables, a barbecue and a firepit. Steps lead up to a separate, elevated terrace with fantastic views across the valley - ideal for sunny breakfasts or evening drinks. We have added a high quality, large trampoline (fully enclosed) to keep your kids entertained. Parking is private, with off-road space for several cars.

Golf
You're unlikely to be coming to the Cotswolds to play golf, but if you can't do without a round, Painswick Golf Club is the nearest 18 hole course, just 2.5 miles away, on top of the panoramic Painswick Beacon. This is the highest point in the Cotswolds with spectacular views across to Wales and is open to the public to walk on (it's on of the 100 mile-long Cotswolds Way). The golf club is closed on Mondays, but open Tues-Sat to non-members. The other side of Stroud is the Minchinhampton Golf Club (7 miles) in stunning surroundings and open to visitors 7 days a week.

Skiing
Dry slope skiing in Gloucester (6 miles), 7 days a week. Skiing, snowboarding, tubing, mat rats and a Snowflex fun park with jumps. Lessons are available - but book ahead for those.
Water skiing and a wide range of other watersports take place at Cotswolds Water Park (13 miles).

Special interest holidays
The Cotswolds area is famous for its pretty limestone villages and rolling hills. It is one of the loveliest and most unspoilt areas of England and ideal for a walking holiday. Whether a short stroll or a more ambitious hike, Slad Valley offers unrivalled walks, with moderately steep climbs rewarded with fabulous views. There are walks in every direction, with a pint at the Woolpack pub the perfect place to end.

Travel
Nearest airport is Bristol 40 miles / 50 minutes. Heathrow is 100 miles / 2 hours. Nearest mainline station is Stroud 2 miles (London Paddington 90 minutes). Drive time from London 2+ hours (approx 100 miles).

Distances
Painswick "Queen of the Cotswolds" is a 2 mile walk. Stroud - farmers' market, supermarkets, leisure centre, cinema 2 miles. Painswick Rococo Garden - the last remaining Rococo garden 3 miles. Cheltenham - beautiful Regency town 12 miles. Cirencester - Roman capital of Britain 15 miles. Bourton on the Water 20 miles. Stow on the wold 25 miles. Bath 31 miles.

Further details
Three supermarkets (Waitrose, Sainsbury's and Tesco) are a couple of miles away in Stroud, and they all deliver to The Old Chapel (place your order online in advance) and with Stroud's excellent farmer's market on Saturday mornings stocking up is easy. There's also a Co-op two miles down the road that opens late for basic groceries, alcohol and newspapers.

Guest comments
D Bassett: We just wanted to let you know that we had a fabulous weekend at the Old Chapel in April. It is a lovely property which has been renovated to an extremely high standard and which has the feel of a family home. The Master bedroom and kitchen in particular were fabulous. To further add to our pleasure of the aesthetics at the Old Chapel was the artwork. We would very much like to return in due course .... the area is beautiful with fabulous views and we became quite partial to the Woolpack!
Dr J Stevenson: The Old Chapel is perfect for large families or groups of friends (in our case) to go for an idyllic weekend. We spent hours out pounding the footpaths between Slad and Painswick, Bisley, The Camp, and the countryside in every direction is just wonderful. Peaceful, rolling hills, you'll hardly meet anyone else along the way. And to be able to come home to a roaring fire or a meal in the wonderful kitchen makes for a very relaxing time. We'll be back!

Owner profile

About the owner
We bought the Old Chapel in 2008, thoroughly renovating it to create a very comfortable and stylish holiday let.

Year purchased: 2008

Why the owner chose a home in this location
We live in London, but fell in love with Slad, with its amazing walks, beautiful views and great local pub - The Woolpack, where author Laurie Lee spent much of his later years. It's like stepping back in time - much of the valley unchanged from the days of Cider with Rosie which Lee wrote about growing up in Slad. If you like hill-walking, away from crowds, but with a good pub at the end of it, Slad Valley is for you.

Unique benefits of the property
Nearby Stroud has all the conveniences you need - farmers' market, supermarkets, cinema, mainline railway station and leisure centre. Slad is just over two hours from London by road and less than half an hour to Cirencester, Cheltenham and a wide range of Cotswold villages. We think the Old Chapel is a very special place - a great mix of an old Cotswolds church and modern, contemporary furnishings. We hope you agree.
