Chillington is a Devon 'long village' located on the coastal road between Kingsbridge and Dartmouth. Kingsbridge is the lively market town for the South Hams and centre of transport connections. Chillington benefits from being readily accessible to a wide range of tourist facilities, including fantastic National Trust beaches, such as at East Portlemouth, or the lifeguard-monitored beach of glorious Start Bay, which is also excellent for anglers. In addition, the Slapton nature reserve and the World War II American tank memorial are near. Within the village itself, there is a village store and post office, a family - friendly pub that serves food, including in its beer garden, a hairdresser, angling store and health centre. Within a mile there is a farm shop that sells local produce, also a butcher and a cafe. Further afield there are excellent pubs and restaurants, such as the Cricket Inn at Beesands, the Church House Inn at Stokenham and the Tower Inn at Slapton.

Check availability The Pound House (4 Bedrooms, Sleeps 7)
A magnificent four bedroom converted barn that was once the cider press to the farm.
The Pound House provides excellent family-sized holiday accommodation suitable for 2-7 persons (max 6 adults).
In addition to the large kitchen diner, which is very well appointed, there is a lounge with French windows opening on to a terrace (new picture due to show fabulous new leather lounge suite).
There is a twin bedroom on the ground level.
The first floor accommodation comprises a spacious master bedroom (5' king size bed) with en suite shower, a twin/triple bedroom, a single bedroom and a family bathroom.
The kitchen includes: electric cooker and hob, washing machine, dishwasher, microwave. Very comprehensively appointed kitchen.
There is very generous off road car parking for guests to The Pound House, with room for two/three vehicles and a small boat.
There is a tidal slipway a mile away at Frogmore.
Please note that this cottage is non smoking and no pets permitted.

Check availability Well Cottage (2 Bedrooms, Sleeps 4)
This cosy cottage retains the well from which its name derives. The cottage is comprised of a dedicated wing of the former farmhouse, and is believed to be the oldest part of the property.
Suitable for 1-4 persons (including any cot), there is one double bedroom (with 5' king size bed) and one twin bedroom, also a bathroom (including bath and walk in shower), all on the first floor. The double bedroom has French windows that open on to a private sunny terrace at the rear. At ground floor level there is an open plan dining-kitchen-lounge, with wood burning stove. In addition, there is a conservatory in which to relax, read the newspapers or play family games.
The kitchen is very comprehensively appointed, including an electric cooker with fan oven, washing machine, dishwasher and microwave.
There is off-road parking available for up to two vehicles.
Please note that this cottage is non smoking and no pets are permitted.

Notes on accommodation
Both cottages have the benefit of oil-fired central heating, as required, with local thermostats for each room.
We are a family-friendly accommodation provider, making it a priority to have available good quality cots, high chairs and stairgates, as required. We will consider baby-sitting requests.
To re-iterate, we are a NON-SMOKING accommodation provider, and also do NOT accept pets.
Well Cottage has a secure terrace for children to play in, and the inner courtyard, shared by both cottages, is especially suitable for supervised play. About 300m away there is the village playing field to play football, other ball games and just to 'let off steam'! Within each cottage there is a cupboard or large hamper packed with children's games, also bookcases of books suited to all ages, also DVDs.
We also welcome the 'silver' population, of whatever age! We have handrails to assist use of baths, and a walk-in shower in both cottages.

Accessibility
We regret that at present our cottages are unsuitable to prospective guests with significant mobility constraints. There is a gentle incline to the driveway (although there is a parking area near the cottages for drop off/loading). In addition, the bathrooms to both cottages are located on the first floor.

In Well Cottage there is restricted headroom in part of each bedroom, although we are told this adds character!

Outside
Each cottage has the benefit of its own private garden terrace. These areas are well planted, attractive and have quality garden furniture. In addition, there is a shared inner courtyard, suitable for sitting out, enjoying a Devon cream tea, reading the papers or having a barbeque. About 300m along the lane there is the village hall and playing field. Here, if the children have energy left following a busy day on the beach, there's a great area for ball games and such like.

Coast/Beach
The beauty of the South Hams area of South Devon is its extensive and most beautiful coastline. The nearest point to access the South West Coastal Path is at Torcross, two miles to the east, and this allows walks to Start Bay Lighthouse (approx three miles), and further along to Hope Cove, Thurlestone Sands, Bigbury and beyond. Heading eastwards, towards Dartmouth, there is breath-taking scenery along the coastline.

Beaches are at Torcross (2 miles), Beesands (3 miles), East Portlemouth (4)

Golf
The renowned Dartmouth Golf and Country Club, which is open to the public, is approximately seven miles distant.

Skiing
If you need to prepare for a winter ski holiday, the dry ski slope is available at Plymouth, approximately 45 minutes away by car.

Travel
The nearest airports are Exeter International (one hour by car), or Plymouth (also about one hour by car). The nearest main railway station (direct from London and the midlands) is Totnes (14 miles), from which public transport is possible.

A huge asset for our guests is the possibility of 'green travel' whilst staying here. There is an hourly bus service between Kingsbridge and Dartmouth, stopping in the village. The view can be appreciated so much more from the top of a double-decker bus!

Distances
The village store is 100m away, the pub only 50m!

Kingsbridge: 4 miles
Dartmouth: 8 miles
Blackpool Sands: 6 miles approx.
Torcross: 2 miles
Salcombe: 10 miles approx by road
Plymouth: 25 miles approx
Exeter: 40 miles approx

Further details
For children, there are lots of interesting things to do in the South Hams. Many don't even cost a lot! Youngsters spend many hours catching crabs at the waterside in Dartmouth, Kingsbridge or Salcombe.

In Kingsbridge there is an exceptional indoor heated swimming pool and a wide variety of other leisure facilities. There are also sporting facilities at Dartmouth and Totnes.

In Kingsbridge there is a traditional 'Reel Cinema' - quaint, but with the latest film releases. At Totnes there is 'China Blue', a pottery where all 'young at heart' people may paint their own pottery and have it ready for the collection on holiday completion, or even posted home. A similar unit has now opened in Kingsbridge.

Kingsbridge, Dartmouth and Totnes all offer banking facilities. There are supermarkets at Kingsbridge, Totnes, Dartmouth, and we are able to receive internet-ordered food deliveries (if pre-warned!).

Immediate eateries are listed above, however there is a diverse provision in Kingsbridge to meet most tastes. Within Chillington there is the boutique hotel whitehouse devon; this is open to the public for breakfasts and all meals throughout the day.

Cycle hire, boat hire and sailing tuition are all readily available nearby.

One of the best things about the South Hams is its glorious beauty - stopping still, and marvelling at our beautiful heritage is something we so seldom get opportunity to do - perhaps with the exception of when we are on holiday!

Please note: as described throughout, we are a former farmhouse, not a currently-active one. In addition, we are in the centre of the village, not deep in rural isolation! There is a map on our owner's website to show you our location.

Owner profile

About the owner
When we had our first child we were introduced to the beautiful South Hams as a place to have relaxation, fresh air, gorgeous views of the sea and rural areas. We fell in love with it and eventually moved to live here permanently! We love old property, the character, the deep stone walls, the graciousness of substantial buildings that have stood the test of time. Allerdale Farmhouse was an impulse purchase several years ago, for it is steeped in history, there are pictures of when only horses passed along what is today's road, and the house was taken over by American soldiers when rehearsing the D Day landing at Start Bay. We are very pleased to share our landmark property with others who appreciate good quality surroundings as a base for enjoying this beautiful area.
