Originally believed to have been a refuge and overnight halt for cattlemen bringing their herds off the moor on their way to market, Ivy Cottage lies between Packsaddle bridge over the Wrey Brook and Drakeford Bridge over the River Bovey. Ivy Cottage is built of stone and cob and has been considerably upgraded over the years! In the main living room we installed a wood-burning stove a few years ago. This is a great success, warms up very quickly and gives off a terrific heat. The well-tended quiet garden is a real suntrap. It takes about 30 minutes to get to the sea near Dawlish and about the same time to get to the delights of Brixham and Torquay. Dartmoor is readily accessible, either walking to the pub at Manaton (1 hour), or by car to Widecombe and Princeton. There are so many different places to go!

About the owner
My family originated in Devon (Beare is a common local surname) and the cottage has been in our family since the 1920's. We mainly keep the cottage for family use - we are spread around the country now - but let it out for short lets. I am a professional in financial services working in London. Our eldest son Jamie, was married in Lustleigh church in September 2010, so the close family connection with the village has not been lost!

Why the owner chose a home in this location
Dartmoor has a special feel to it. The higher moors are wild and can be bleak during winter. There are lots of steep valleys with their own microclimates with pretty churches, old bridges, pubs and quietness. The situation of Ivy Cottage is arcadian, a rural idyll. If you are thinking of writing a book, this is the place to make a start!
