Owner profile
Alyssa and Sue - Christmas 2009 at Wayside Cottage
About the owner
Hello, I'm Sue Fishwick (seen here with my daughter, Alyssa) and have the joy of owning Wayside Cottage. We've had the cottage for over 20 years and love it more and more as time goes on. In fact, I would sell my home in Manchester before I'd sell the cottage and hope that I will retire here. Wayside cottage has changed considerably over the years and lots of love and effort have been invested in it. Guests tell us it "feels special" and very much a "family home". We feel very privileged to have Wayside Cottage and enjoy it whatever the season or weather and however short or long our stay.
Year purchased: 1980's
Why the owner chose a home in this location
I fell in love with Cartmel in 1982 on my first ever trip to the Lake District! We were sitting on a hillock near the Racecourse and I dreamed of owning a cottage in the village. Five years later that dream came true. We lived and worked near Manchester and wanted a country bolt hole within easy striking distance. The journey from door to door takes us less than 1 & 1/2 hours. Ideal for weekends or midweek escapes. Once based in Cartmel it is easy to either stay local and enjoy the gentle, undulating countryside or strike out to the more northern, craggy regions of the Lakes.
Unique benefits of the property
Wayside Cottage is in an idyllic, peaceful setting next to a babbling beck, surrounded by countryside (and horses) yet still only a few minutes walk from beautiful Cartmel village. What's more, our location is perfect for watching the horse races whilst relaxing in the garden! The cottage is also ideal for drivers who want to get back to nature and abandon their cars - there are so many facilities and walks on the doorstep. Whatever your age group, Wayside Cottage and Cartmel has something to offer - from playing Pooh sticks in the beck to enjoying the delights of a 12 course, gourmet meal at L'Enclume (our local, Michelin star rated restaurant).
