'The Lodge' resembles a French gite from the garden and has a cosy sitting room with log fire and an attractive kitchen. There is a patio with garden furniture and a barbecue which looks out over the valley, the wood and the pond. It lies in 6 acres of grounds belonging to Holycombe, a healing and personal development centre, which runs courses such as yoga and singing. It is a perfect place to explore the Cotswolds, near to Moreton in the Marsh, Stow on the Wold, Chipping Campden and Chipping Norton. It's also only 15 miles from Stratford-upon-Avon, 12 miles from Banbury and 23 miles from Oxford. Chipping Norton has a good theatre and the locality has many good pubs and restaurants. There is the famous Whichford Pottery in the village and an excellent pub - The Norman Knight. The Rollright Neolithic Stone Circle is about 3 miles away. There are also numerous footpaths including those through Whichford Wood which is famous for it's flora and fauna, especially in bluebell time.

Owner profile
Sally having the time of her life
About the owner
Sal and Andy live in and run a Healing Retreat Centre in the Heart of the Cotswolds but we seem to have acquired two other houses, because we have a passion for restoring ruins in beautiful places! We have 6 children who are all grown up and doing interesting things, and Andy is trying to sell his water purifying business in Hitchin (a long way from home). We have lived in the area for about 39 years and our 5 grandchildren live up the road. We spend our time running our businesses and seeing our family and visiting our houses in Spain and Scotland to 'get away from it all', but whatever 'it' is seems to come with us! Andy loves tinkering with his old cars and mowers and actually mowing on some ancient machine and Sal loves singing and dancing and a million other things.
Year purchased: 1995
Why the owner chose a home in this location
This property has a history - it was once a Norman Castle and the water filled moat is still here. From those glorious beginnings, it plunged into the dark ages and became a car dump and scrap yard in the 50's, and my husband decided to rescue it and restore it to it's former glory by designing and building our own house for our large family. We poured love into it and Holycombe is now our home, and we run a Retreat Centre, and The Lodge and Studio are in our grounds. We love the rolling hills, and proximity of the wood, the gorgeous pubs and villages, being on the edge and yet part of a thriving village with a great pub and lovely people. It is such a pleasure for us and our grandchildren to enjoy the wildlife, develop the vegetable garden and camping areas in these beautiful grounds.
Unique benefits of the property
Looking out of the window every morning at breath-taking beauty, we feel very privileged and blessed. Although it is the farthest from the sea, it is central to everything else which means although you are in a haven of peace, it doesn't take an age to get to, and is near lots of culture. The village has the famous Whichford Pottery with classes and talks, and a brilliant pub - The Norman Knight. Wonderful walks in the Cotwolds right outside the door and especially in bluebell time, and the autumn when the wood is full of chestnuts and hazels and blackberries. The Lodge and Studio are cosy and attractive and our Lodge guests enjoy relaxing on the patio or barbecuing or bashing a ball about on our grass-tennis court, or rowing on the pond. A wonderful base for exploring this lovely area.
