Amongst Olive Groves, 'Agrotourism' Village, 20 mins Beaches
Sleeps 6 (3 Bedrooms)

|
Completed in Jan 2006, our lovely villa is situated in the village of Buyukkonuk, not on a development. A unique feature of the property are the Cathedral ceilings laid by hand in cane throughout the property. This gives an immense feeling of space and light. Verandahs surround the house. Come and experience a true North Cypriot way of life, amongst the characters of this lovely village. Swim on still deserted beaches. The drive to the tip of the Karpas Peninsular will enthrall you. Explore off track and discover isolated beaches. Development is begining, in North Cyprus, but our tranquil village with its own olive press, new bakery, little shops, and restaurant is like stepping back 50 years. We have two bikes for you to use. A car is a necessity here. The nearest large town is historic Famagusta, 40 mins away. Many villages around us. Just 20 mins north and south to glorious beaches. Cycle, walk, pick flowers, just really relax. A special place to stay, and secret places to explore.

Outside
Built on an old olive grove, we have 4 ancient olive trees which give wonderful shade. Fig trees, peach trees and loquat trees dot the garden. Now three years into maturity the bourganvillias and oleander flower profusely and we have planted wonderful cacti that thrive in this hot climate. The grapevine now drips with overhanging grapes in summer on the rear veranda. We thank all our guests for their constant help with watering!

Further details
Buyukkonuk, or the 'Gateway to the Karpas' as it is begining to be known on the island, is the first village in the North to be given Agro tourism status. Full of character, it is successfully holding on to the way of life known for centuries. Bread baked in outside ovens, a craft centre, with weaving displays. Possibilites to join in with olive picking and processing, cheese making. Walks galore to pick wild flowers in spring. There are various shops, and a petrol station. The hub of the village is Sultans - a shop, cafe, and restaurant with evening entertainment at weekends! Shepherds pass our door everyday with their sheep. Donkeys brey. Owls hoot! A new restaurant has just opened a short walk from the village centre, converted from an old greek school, full of character and excellent food. Nearest bank Iskele, 25 minutes drive. Supermarket at Bogaz.

Guest comments
We first discovered North Cyprus in 2006 and it is just a magical island. The Karpas is so unspoilt and we have had wonderful holidays just enjoying the peace and the quiet, and of course the weather. But this house in Buyukkonuk made it even more special. It has everything you could want for a holiday and there is a great homely feel and you can see how much care has been spent on it. The village is so friendly and people just can't do enough to make you feel welcome. We were even invited to a local wedding and the local children would call in to visit. Sitting on the terrace the only disturbance you are likely to have is the shepherd going past with his flock. We would recommend this house to anyone who wants to feel the real character of North Cyprus rather than staying in a more traditional tourist area."

About the owner
Pat and I met 15 years ago when working in the Travel Industry. Pat lives in Wales and I live in rural Dorset with my husband. We have travelled together many times to Europe and beyond and have a special fondness for the countries of the Near and Middle East.
Year purchased: 2002
Why the owner chose a home in this location
We stumbled upon North Cyprus in the Spring of 2002 and fell in love with it - especially the stunning Karpas Peninsular. With meagre funds we decided together to buy a small plot of land and build a villa in the unspoilt village of Buyukkonuk. Everything was arranged locally and we are proud to support the local community there. The builder actually came from Buyukkonuk. We didn't want the house to remain empty the months we are not there and having always worked in tourism we decided to rent it out to friends and discerning holidaymakers who we knew would love the place as much as we do. It seems we are right. Year after year guests are returning.
The Karpas is a land of untouched beaches - wild flowers - remote villages and the friendliest of people.
Unique benefits of the property
Our villa was designed by ourselves - it is NOT on a development. It is in a rural village situation which we love amongst the local population who all like to chat or pop in for a coffee. Many people who visit say it is like the Cyprus they remember long ago.
