Notes on accommodation
For the cooler months there is a corner fireplace in the lounge and a portable gas-heater if required. The A/C can also be run on heating setting. The property is especially suitable for older children (11 years up; younger children would need supervising around the pool) and also for people who do not like stairs. The roof terrace is reached by an easy metal stairway with safety gate at bottom.
Accessibility
There is a large, paved parking/turning area immediately in front of the house with just 2 steps up to the porch and front door. The house is otherwise completely on one level, apart from the roof terrace which has a safety gate at the bottom of the stairs.
Outside
The garden is well-established amongst olive and citrus trees which provide shade as well as fruit in season. The small pool (approx 15 x 25 feet) is completely private being at the back of the house; there are 4 sun loungers with mattresses, 6 armchairs, 2 small tables, 2 large sun umbrellas, an outside dining table and chairs. The roof terrace has a built-in BBQ and shady pergola, dining table and 6 chairs.
Coast/Beach
One of the nearest beaches is 5 minutes drive and has family-friendly activities, a large pool, restaurant and water sports. The local 'town' (Incirli) beach is sandy and in a sheltered cove. Other quiet beaches (eg. Guzelyali) are about 10 minutes drive to the west, while scuba-diving centres can be found at beaches 10 minutes drive towards Kyrenia. For an almost totally wild beach drive 40 minutes to the west to Akdeniz beach, a huge expanse of sand and shallow waters with one cafe/restaurant.
Golf
18-hole golf course about an hour's drive. 9-hole course 45 minutes.
Travel
Ercan (Lefkosa) airport is about 40 minutes drive from Lapta (all flights via Turkey), Larnaca about 80 minutes. Pick-ups can be arranged from either airport. Car hire, though not essential, is recommended for at least part of your holiday; car hire companies usually offer a discount on airport pickups if you hire a car from them.
Distances
Kyrenia, the tourist centre of North Cyprus, is 8 miles; St Hilarion crusader castle 10 miles; Bellapais Abbey 12 miles; Nicosia (Lefkosa) about 40 minutes, Famagusta and Salamis 90 minutes, Karpas peninsula (panhandle) 2 hours. To the west Guzelyurt is about 35 minutes, Soli one hour, Vouni 80 minutes (these last two are ancient Graeco-roman sites).
Further details
Lapta village has all the basic shops including a good pharmacy, hairdressers, mini markets, butcher, bakers, cafes and restaurants. Most people will probably, however, shop at one or more of the several large supermarkets on the main road just outside the village, or just off the main road towards Alsancak. There are also pizza and kebab takeaways, cafes and bars all along the main coast road both east and west of Lapta. There is a good restaurant within 6-8 minutes walk from the villa, the Lemba, others are listed in the information folder and on the pinboard.
North Cyprus is famous for its unique orchids which bloom from late February to April. Conducted walks, with lunch and tea, are organised to see the orchids and other wild flowers in the mountains just above Lapta village. (ask owners for more details)
Walking in the mountains is an exhilarating and rewarding experience; there is almost no development, apart from abandoned monasteries, and a good network of footpaths/tracks.
It is also a good centre for scuba-diving with crystal-clear waters and off-shore wrecks.
A recently opened 18-hole golf course is about 25 minutes drive from the villa.
The Karpas peninsula, with its unspoilt sandy beaches, wildlife (donkeys and turtles) and ancient ruins is a must if you are staying for more than a week.
Nicosia is the last divided city in Europe and as such alone deserves a visit; it also has well-preserved walls and medieval buildings, now gradually being restored to their former glories.
Booking notes
Booking is by phone or email in the first instance, with a 20% deposit to secure the booking and final payment, plus £100 security deposit (refundable one week after the end of your holiday), 4 weeks latest before departure.

Owner profile
About the owner
June was a teacher until her retirement and also edited a number of travel books; she plays tennis regularly. John spent 23 years with The Daily Telegraph and was its education editor for 18 of them. The last three years with the Telegraph were spent as head of its Paris office. He was then a columnist for The Independent and later joined the Committee of Polytechnics as director of public affairs, helping the country's polytechnics to become universities.
Both fell in love with North Cyprus while on a brief visit and decided to build a house in a beautiful orchard with views down to the sea and up to the mountain.
Year purchased: 2001
Why the owner chose a home in this location
We loved the site an orchard containing many olive, orange and lemon trees, whose fruit we gladly and freely share with our guests. It is a bungalow but has a roof terrace with a BBQ and fantastic views across the sea to Turkey. It is in a quiet location and within easy reach of restaurants and shops. We added a small swimming pool after building the house that allows guests to cool off in the island's hotter days.
