With breathtaking views of both the mountains and the sea, our villa is set in quiet Esentepe-on-Sea, 20 minutes drive from the main centre of Northern Cyprus, Kyrenia. Built on the edge of a peaceful, coastal complex of houses, the villa accommodates 6-8 people in comfort. That said, the beautiful weather means that most of our guests spend their time relaxing on one of the shaded sun terraces or swimming in the private pool. If you prefer the sea to the pool, then grab a bottle of water and some sun cream and a 10 minute saunter across the carob grove will take you down to our nearest beach where you can sample the stunning clear blue seas of the Mediterranean on a beach, unspoilt by commercialisation.

Bedrooms: In terms of sleeping arrangements, there are 4 bedrooms consisting of 1 double bedroom, 2 twin-bedded bedrooms and 1 panoramic room with a futon (this is the only bedroom without air-conditioning but it gets a fabulous through breeze at night).
Bathrooms: There is one bathroom upstairs, with a loo, shower and bath in it and there is a loo and wet-room on the ground floor, serving the two twin-bedded rooms. In the past, we have found this particularly useful for older relatives and little ones
Kitchen: The villa has a fully equipped kitchen with oven, fridge freezer, dishwasher and washing machine and an air-conditioning unit for when the heat just gets too much!
Living Rooms: Off of the kitchen, there is both a comfortable dining area with ample space and an inviting sitting room where many a competitive game of scrabble has been played over the years
Other: Awnings protect the spacious terraces that surround the house from the midday heat but at the end of the day, when things cool off, these terraces have provided us with a wonderful entertaining space to share freshly prepared BBQ food with friend.
Cleaning/towels/
linen/maid service:
Cleaned by our very helpful housekeepers before you arrive, you will find that there are copious amounts of clean linen and towels to hand in the villa although you should bring your own swimming towels.

Notes on accommodation
Jointly owned by two families, Liz and Ian Nixon and Ray and Sue Sawyer, the house was laid out by a wonderful local interior designer to ensure that it was furnished simply and beautifully whilst also bearing in mind the needs of our young families. This was five years ago now and our children are fast approaching their teen years, but the house remains impeccably kept thanks to our on-hand and efficient housekeepers, Donna and Terry.

Accessibility
The two twin rooms and the wet room serving these rooms have been particularly useful for older relatives and younger children.

Outside
Most of our guests spend most of their time outside, relaxing on the sun loungers in front of the pool, cooking at the brick BBQ or when the heat of the summer just gets that bit too much - reading a book on one of the shaded sun terraces.

Coast/Beach
If it is just too hot for you to walk across the Carob Grove and down to the secluded beach, then it can also be reached along a sandy track by car. Either way, don’t forget to take picnic supplies and sun-cream as this beach is totally unspoilt and there is no Costa Coffee here! Even in the height of summer, don’t expect to see more than three or four other families so you certainly won’t be fighting for somewhere to lay your towel.

Golf
The villa is just a few miles from Esentepe Golf & Country Club, which opened in 2006 and is rated one of the best in the Med. The academy course and drive are superb. The European-style food is great here as well and there is a luxurious full spa available for members and non-members alike if you feel like being pampered. It is not too difficult to book treatments but you can do this before your holiday by accessing their website. www.korineumgolf.com

Travel
There are three options available when flying to Cyprus. You can either fly to Larnaca or Paphos in the Republic of Cyprus, or to Erçan Airport in Northern Cyprus. Flights to Larnaca/Paphos take 4½ to 5 hours, but there’s a longer drive than from Erçan (Larnaca to Esentepe takes 2½ hours; Paphos to Esentepe, 3 hours; Erçan to Esentepe, no more than 45 minutes). Remember that Cyprus is two hours ahead of the UK when considering flight times.

Distances
Esentepe is one of the many charming Mediterranean villages of Northern Cyprus. Literally translated, Esentepe means windy hill but the town is not so much windy as cooled by the breeze that rises from the Mediterranean that is spread out before it. The village has 2 schools a doctors and a small selection of restaurants and shops selling all the essential items, but apart from these amenities the village is mainly home to a mixture of eclectic and welcoming turkish Cypriots.

Further details
Eating out. Should you wish to venture a bit further afield than Esentepe Village, there are endless restaurants and we have found the food to be of a very high standard - fresh and delicious. It's generally cooked in a fairly simple style, which is great for children. Be careful not to over-order: by the time you've eaten the seemingly endless meze, there's rarely need for more.
We would be hard pushed to mention even a fraction of the excellent eateries we have visited but we have two particular favourites; for simple and close to home, we recommend Benoz at Alagadi Beach. Hidden away from the beach, this restaurant is run by Genghis’ cousin and his family. You will always be welcomed with a smile and great hospitality at this restaurant which specialises in traditional Turkish cuisine. If you are after a fine-dining experience (but not for vegetarians!), then why not visit Niazis Restaurant on the west hand side of Kyrenia harbour. Watch your food being cooked in front of your eyes whilst catching a glimpse of some of the most glamorous residents of Northern Cyprus!

North Cyprus Scuba Diving
Be assured that you are in capable hands when dealing with Genghis who has run his PADI approved scuba diving school from Alagadi beach for many years now. He offers taster sessions for the uninitiated through to expert diving courses for those with experience. He takes no nonsense from children and adults alike but we have never once questioned that our children are in safe hands.

Alternatively and for adults and slightly older children, there is a the Water Sports Centre at the Acapulco Hotel which is within a fifteen minute drive. There is a superb club house, a sandy beach and music and cabaret in the evenings in the main summer season. The Acapulco offers wind-surfing, water skiing, canoeing, jet skiing and water bicycle riding (although we have yet to discover what this is!)

“Just to say thank you so much for sharing your wonderful Cyprus holiday hideaway with us. We all had a fabulous time and enjoyed it immensely. The peace and quiet was great although lying by the pool with my book soaking up the sun was tough but I managed to cope!!”

“We had a great time. The villa was lovely and we made full use of it. We also visited the sights – St Hilarion, Salamis, Bellapais and saw hatchlings on Turtle Beach. I am also much better read”

Why the owner chose a home in this location
We have always loved Cyprus and have been so impressed by the Turkish Cypriots who are utterly charming and very friendly. We also new that the children would be welcomed and cared for, which was especially important to us when the children were younger. The villa has also afforded us the opportunity of escaping from the rat race - albeit for a relatively short amount of time. We switch off whilst we are there and do so many things as a family that so often, we don't have time to do whilst in London. Hence the reference to games of Scrabble!
