Burntisland is home to probably the very best natural harbour on the entire Firth of Forth and it is believed to have been utilised by the Romans in AD83. In 1119 a castle was built which overlooked the harbour with the aim of defending this major strategic location. Successive landowners have since built onto and extended the castle. The town and castle were taken by Cromwell in 1651 and further developed as he hoped to use the harbour as a base for the invasion of Scotland. Not all of the cottages in Burntisland are ancient, but all of them offer a chance to appreciate the history of this region of Scotland. Burntisland cottages are a great accommodation option for families and large groups who want to visit Burntisland and explore the area.

Shipyards and Trade

During the Second World War the shipyards here were responsible for adding 69 vessels to the British fleet, and it was a major player in the export of coal. The last ship was launched here in 1969 with much of the old shipyards now given over to building equipment for deep sea oil exploration. Apartments in Burntisland are modern and somehow belie the history that this historic location has been witness to, though all of the holiday accommodation in Burntisland will put you in the perfect place to discover the centuries of history for yourself.

What About the Castle?

Rossend Castle was still being expanded up to the 18th century, though eventually ownership passed to the town council, who lacking any real foresight turned this wonderful historic building into a hostel type accommodation, until finally it was left to decay and became abandoned to the elements. Holiday rentals in Burntisland will place you in the perfect location to see the castle as it stands today, beautifully and sympathetically restored by a firm of architects who now use it at their headquarters. Holiday homes in Burntisland are a great place to spend a holiday.
