The region around villas in Vendee certainly merits exploration. If you head northeast you’ll come to Maine-et-Loire, which is an area renowned for its magnificent chateux. Angers is a great place to start and boasts a stunning fortified castle, which is protected as one of France’s national monuments. A little closer to farmhouses in Bretignolles-sur-Mer is the city of Nantes, which is often rated as one of the country’s most “liveable” places. It’s a charming city with a number of interesting historical buildings, as well as the sprawling Chateau des Ducs de Bretagne. The Vendee inland boasts a wealth of picturesque villages – Vouvant, named among the most beautiful in France, is about an hour from Bretignolles-sur-Mer self-catering accommodation.
