The settlement of Blairgowrie was largely developed due to the power of the river water being used to power the linen mills along the banks of the river. As jobs increased the village developed to house workers for the mills like weavers. Some of the factories were producing linen, others jute and the village had to expand to house the 1600 workers that manned the factories. Some of the Blairgowrie cottages for rent may well be original weaver’s cottages, in which case they may have many tales to tell to guests. Not all of the cottages in Blairgowrie are this old though.
The 1900’s saw a shift away from the textile industry and more attention was given to the availability of skiing and winter sports in the area. Soon hotels and stores catering exclusively for skiers began to develop. A boom in the leisure industry began. Apartments in Blairgowrie are the ideal accommodation option for winter tourists although all of the holiday accommodation in Blairgowrie offers access to a wide range of all weather leisure activities, including two full 18 hole, championship golf courses as well as a 9 hole course.
One thing you may not realise about this area is that it is now central to the soft fruit industry in Scotland, especially for raspberry production. The south facing slopes at Strathmore are filled with raspberry fields. At harvest time people would travel from miles around to seek employment as fruit pickers, though this option is no longer available as the process has been mechanised. Holiday rentals in Blairgowrie are in one of the most beautiful areas of Scotland, so get out and see as much of it as you can.
