Notes on accommodation
We now have air-conditioning in all of the three bedrooms. We have had many families with children including our own grandchildren in our house over the years. The pool area is surrounded on all four sides by a dry stone wall and a door with a latch to make it safe for children under adult supervision.
Outside
We have a well stocked garden with many different shrubs and fruit trees. There is a separate barbecue built into the side of the house near the patio. The private pool is in a walled area half way down the garden, with plenty of room on all sides for sun bathing or lying in the shade on reclining chairs. It is 8 x 5 meters with a shallow and deep end,is kept immaculately clean and, with the eating area, can be flood lit at night.
Coast/Beach
We are roughly ten minutes, l2 minutes and l5 mins from the nearest beaches by car. For bathing off the rocks in a delightful circular bay it is l0 mins by car and there are good small beaches another two mins on either side. One has a restaurant and both are good for children. If you want to take a picnic or go further afield there are wonderful beaches 50 mins away on the North side of the island which are unspoilt as these are rural areas where no development is allowed.
Golf
The only golf course golf course on the island is about 50 mins away by car at Son Parc on the North coast.
Travel
The international airport of Mahon is only 20 minutes away from the farm house and can be reached by taxi easily on arrival or you can pick up your hire car. However car hire is essential, unless you plan to spend your entire holiday around the house's pool and garden, walking locally and shopping in the excellent supermarket (5 mins walk).
There are several local restaurants in easy walking distance.
Mahon airport is 15 mins away and there is an excellent taxi service.
Distances
San Lluis is the nearest town with plenty of restaurants, shops, bank, cash points etc. 5 mins in the car.
Mahon is only l5 mins and is a fascinating medieval port built round the finest harbour in the Mediterranean. Monte Toro is the highest hill on the island about 40 mins drive along a scenic route to the monastry from which you can see all over the island and across to Majorca. The Arab town of Cuidadela at Western end of the island is an hour 20 minutes away by car.

Owner profile
Francisco Preto y Neto
About the owner
As a family we have had a long connection with Menorca. One of the owners relations, Francisco Preto y Neto, was representative for the Balearic Islands in the Cortes in Madrid in 1823. His father had been British Consul during the British occupation and so he was in favour of democracy. These views meant that he had to flee for his life from the Spanish King by escaping to America where he married an American lady, Mary Griffiths. Subsequently he was appointed Spanish ambassador to Mexico in 1838. His portrait is in the Ayuntamento in Mahon and his wife is the only women buried in the American naval cemetery on the North side of Mahon harbour. In 1972 we bought the old farm house so our family, grandchildren and friends can continue to enjoy the beauty and history of Menorca.
Why the owner chose a home in this location
We were intrigued by the house's history in that it was one of 2 semi detached houses built for Menorcans by the British so that they could grow vegetables and rear pigs for the British fleet. There is still the old pig sty and well in the garden. It provides an ideal location to have a Mediterranean garden, a quiet rural setting for holidays, near to shops and at the same time a house with old Menorcan charm rather than living in a modern resort full of modern boxes. With a car you can choose which beach to go to either 10 or 40 minutes away according to the direction of the wind or whether you want to be all day on the beach with a picnic or just a bathe and come home. We were fortunate to have a good local architect to modernise the house inside yet still to retain its farm house charm.
Unique benefits of the property
With the garden and the pool area with its shaded pergola, you can live out of doors eating either on the patio under the awning near the house and barbcue or down by the pool. Both areas are surrounded by flowers and shrubs, particularly jasmin, bourgainvilla, lantana etc. which attract all kinds of butterflies - even swallow tails. This makes an ideal stting for a family holiday which is child friendly as we have 9 grand children who love Menorca as do their parents and grandparents.
