Notes on accommodation
The house is built on a hillside, and is our second home. The front door is reached up a ramp to one side, and is on a mezzanine betwen the living space and the bedrooms. To benefit from the wonderful views and the sea breeze, the living space is upstairs, with terraces overlooking the sea, a lockable shutter door leading to an outside staircase down to the pool or up to the roof terrace. The bedroom level below leads out through the back door onto the pool terraces, which are 2 levels, with stairs leading down to the drive. The garden gates can be shut.
Accessibility
Unsuitable for wheelchairs. Constructed on a hillside, there is a ramp up to the front door, which is on a mezzanine between the living space and the bedrooms. Stairs cannot be avoided. The gravel drive makes pushing a wheelchair difficult. Though my 93 year old mother who walks with sticks, comes to stay with us regularly.
Outside
A sweeping gravel drive with parking. Lower lawn with a stone table feature. Mature, lush gardens with lovely oleander hedging. Pool terrace surrounded by tropical palms and another lawn with an old olive, under which is another stone table feature. Poolside loungers and wooden relaxers beneath a dappled covered pergola. Drinks by the pool? There is a downstairs fridge for just this purpose, and foldable chairs and a table. Upstairs, the dining terrace, with views to the south of Monte Toro and the end of the bay, has a table and chairs and a gas bar-b-que under a covered pergola; the other, with views to the bay, has comfortable chairs and a table for drinks time! This terrace has a roof, and transparent wind blinds to roll down when wet or windy but still be outside. All these chairs have soft, removable cushions, which you can bring inside should it rain.
Coast/Beach
2 minutes walk to the sea. 3-20minutes drive to beautiful sandy north coast beaches. Nearest is Tirant, just 3 mins drive but further round there is Caballeria, Binimela, and stunning Pregonda. Son Parc is 10 minutes. Fornells has several little swimming areas and provides some good snorkelling. Across the bay is well worth a visit, (hire a kayak or a boat in Fornells) where there are several lovely little sandy beaches and good snorkelling.
Golf
The only golf course on the island (18 hole) is 10 mins by car
Travel
Mahon airport is 30 minutes away. Car hire is advisable though not essential. The village shop provides most necessities. Fornells is 1/2 mile of safe walking, where there are more facilities available such as 2 supermarkets, 3 bakeries, newspapers, a variety of shops, bars and restaurants. There are regular bus services to Mahon and Mercadal, from where you can travel on to the old capital of Ciudadella.
Distances
1/2 min walk to village shop which stocks most necessities, 1/2 min to a restaurant which specialise is bar-b-q, with the most delicious steaks, well worth a visit. Another restuarant 100yds) is on the sea front with lovely views over the bay, and a modern cuisine. Fornells (1/2 mile) has a bank, several fish restaurants, many others, bars. and a market twice a week - a must for teenage girls. Mercadal (4miles)has almost everything plus petrol. Bird reserve 5 minutes drive.
Further details
Cami de Caval is a lovely walk which goes round the island. It can be picked up at the end of the bay, and a brisk walk to Son Parc can end in lunch there before you return. The local Bird Reserve draws people from around the world to spot the unusual and rare visitors we have throughout the summer. Small speedboats can be hired for the day near the harbour in Fornells. If the sea is too rough, the bay itself offers lovely beaches on the far side, as well as some good snorkelling and walking. Best is the kayaking, as the bay is very shallow at the south end, but a kayak can go anywhere. Fornells Fiestas are well worth attending, as are any of the island villages' own fiestas. Cuidadella and Mahon have some lovely historic buildings, Mahon has a spectacular harbour, and there are many Neolithic Paleo-Christian, Roman and Moorish sites on the island of interest. A Roman camp, still being excavated is situated on the north coast, 15 mins drive away beyond Cavalleria.

Owner profile
About the owner
Many year ago I lived and worked in the south of Menorca and fell in love with the island. Since I have been married, my husband and I holidayed here with our children every year. We preferred the quieter north of the island, and particularly Ses Salines. When land became available we bought 2 plots and built this house ourselves in 2000. We come several times every year, as this house is our second home.
Why the owner chose a home in this location
We have always particularly loved Ses Salines. It is away from the crowds, and tranquil. Our children were safe to roam the streets when they were young, and there was always plenty for them to do - windsurfing, sailing, boating, kayaking. When we built the house, we particularly wanted to benefit from the spectacular views. We all love being in Ses Salines, and our children, who are adults now, still love it too. They like to come when we are there and fill the house with friends. We are so lucky.
Unique benefits of the property
This is the only house is Ses Salines with such spectacular views. It is unique, and we love to sit as soon as we arrive, just drinking in the tranquil panorama.
