Mini Penthouse in Palma's Old Town
Located on one of Palma's Most Beautiful Streets, very quiet at night, bustling during the day
Sleeps 2/3 (1 Bedroom)

This terrifically charming little penthouse has two private terraces, a small enclosed one which serves as entry to the flat, and a large one, measuring 30sq.m, with a panoramic rooftop view of the spires of 4 churches and those of Palma's emblematic Cathedral. The flat itself is perfectly laid out and exceptionally roomy despite its overall small size. Ancient exposed beams, terracotta tiled floors and some original stone work left exposed, comprise the ambiance. Entry to the building boasts an especially romantic example of the famous Palma townhouse patio, with potted aspidistras and 18th century intaglio stable doors. As far as the area is concerned, the Medieval City is on your doorstep, with other Palma 'palacios' nearby in streets with names like Zavella and Morey.

Accessibility
This is a top floor flat with a big terrace surrounded with masonry balustrades (and in that sense very safe), but which is probably less suitable for small children than accommodation without such a terrace. The flat is on the third floor of a building without a lift, so that anyone who finds stairs a problem would perhaps want to look for more accessible accommodation.
Outside
The open-air features of this penthouse are lovely, with views all across the rooftops of the medieval city. There is a teak table with canvas director's chairs, and a sun umbrella. The larger of the two terraces has a small portable barbecue.
Coast/Beach
10 minutes walk or 8 minutes drive to municipal beaches. For the spectacular beaches on the north and south coasts, you would need a car, although there are comfortable air conditioned buses there and back at appropriate times of the day.
Golf
There are several new golf courses, but one of the oldest and most famous is at the Son Vida Hotel, 10 minutes drive away.
Travel
Palma airport, "Son San Joan", is 7 minutes by car, and maximum 10 via the excellent bus service (Bus number 1) which stops every 15 minutes very near the flat (the same bus doing the circuit to the passenger ferry pickup and dropoff). If you are bringing your car, the drive from the ferry is less than 15 minutes.
Distances
From the flat to the farthest points on the north coast the drive is only an hour and a half, so all places of interest are fairly close, with many of them actually within a few minutes walk of the flat.
Further details
Walking distance to Palau Solleric Art Centre, Es Baluard Museum of Modern Art, many of Palma's Gothic and Baroque churches, and the Cathedral (with the highly polemical "fishes" nave designed and recently installed by Miquel Barcelo).
Luxury shopping street is 10 minutes on foot.
Supermarkets and small grocery shops are 5-10 minutes on foot.
There are several family owned restaurants a couple of minutes walk from the door.
Booking notes
To book: a 15% booking advance to reserve the flat, not refunded. The balance four weeks before arrival. A security deposit of €200 is required at arrival, refunded upon departure.
Owner profile
Smiley Anglo-American expat, at your service
About the owner
Your host is an Anglo-American expatriate and longtime resident of the island. Painter and sculptor as a very young man, his artistic evolution led him to design, and eventually to posts as university lecturer in Barcelona, before retiring to Mallorca once more, specifically to restore old houses. This he's been doing now for 5 years, and has never been happier.
The family is composed of 4 generations, and starts with a terrifically amusing matriarch of 101, down to a lovely prima donna of 5, great granddaughter of the titular head of the group.
We all chip in to make the property comfortable and pleasing. The centenarian, who learned watercolour painting at the age of 96, has done a number of paintings of butterflies, fishes and flowers which hang on the walls of the flat.
Year purchased: 1990
Why the owner chose an apartment in this location
I bought here because of the inherent beauty of the old town and the logistical sense that locating in Palma's medieval city made at the time. It was quite a leap of faith since at the time all the original families were leaving their great-grannies in the old town-houses or "palacios" in search of modern villas in seaside towns or new houses in the middle class suburbs that were growing up around the edges of Palma. I fell in love with the area precisely because no one else wanted it. As a designer I try to see past the extraneous detail to the crux of the matter, and to make something beautiful from raw material that most people wouldn't twig to the usefulness of. In the end the EU saw what I had seen, and years later declared Monti-Sion one of the most beautiful streets on the island.
Unique benefits of the property
Our building, the foundations of which date back to Roman times, is very near the municipal bathing beaches, but at the same time is within a few minutes walk of all the cultural attractions of the city: architectural landmarks, museums, and the proliferation of churches the enclave possesses.
The principal shopping street is about 8 minutes from our door, and the many cafés and restaurants, both locally flavoured and more broadly international, are reachable by foot.
Finally this little flat has private terraces which together double the living space, making it the sort of place that allows guests total autonomy and privacy within the unit.
