About this property

Historic stone house sharing ramparts of 11th century castle in Dordogne Val

This unique 18th century stone house built onto the ramparts of an 11th century castle has fully enclosed gardens and terraces with outdoor jacuzzi and is toddler friendly with many baby/child extras available. It is a dream come true for romantics and those passionate about medieval history, perfect for a relaxing affordable family holiday or a romantic stress-free getaway.

Doted with antique hand made furniture, chestnut high-beamed ceilings and meter-thick walls, this charming, historic and recently renovated property is a pure delight. Built with stones from the adjacent castle, Château Cottage blends the authentic traditional style of the Perigord region with the full comforts of modern living.

Château Cottage is ideally located in the heights of the beautiful and peaceful medieval village of Carlux in the heart of the Dordogne Valley with plenty of parking and all amenities within walking distance, yet only a short drive to major historical sites.

The Exterior: The front garden has long blooming white roses that grace the 100 year-old wrought iron gate. Honeysuckle and wisteria and vine-covered trellises wind their way around the house to the charming side terrace.

The fully-enclosed back garden, bordered by the tall ramparts and tower of the 11th century Castle of Carlux, has a separate terrace leading out from the downstairs bedroom. Graced by jasmine, rosemary and elegant old roses trees, this completely private garden and with jacuzzi open out onto splendid views of the rolling valley of Carlux. Having dinner prepared in the open barbecue pit at the base of the castle ramparts is an unforgettable experience not to be missed.

Château Cottage is located in the heart of the tiny classed village of Carlux. Plenty of parking is available in front of the house. A two-minute walk downhill brings you to all amenities: café/restaurant, bakery, corner shop/newsagents, a butcher’s shop, doctor’s office, post office, and farmer’s market.

The Interior: The spacious sunken living room features the huge hand-worked stones of the castle ramparts, a high oak-beamed ceiling and polished chestnut floors. It has lots of natural light thanks to two large double-glazed picture windows and a glass door opening out onto a terrace and private garden. Equipped with a cast iron wood burning stove, this magnificent room is as warm and cosy in the winter as it is cool and airy in the summer.

The large, roomy chef's kitchen has a traditional Perigordan “cantou” fireplace with copper accents, featuring an antique walnut farmhouse table for dining.

The downstairs bedroom is fitted with high oakwood beams and double doors which open out to a private flowered terrace with gorgeous views. There is a luxurious full bathroom on this floor, newly fitted with exquisite mosaic stone floor tiles, a black marble sink and an Italian shower. The bath tub is equipped with hand rails for reduced mobility guests.

Upstairs there are two elegant bedrooms with polished chestnut floors furnished with antiques, and one joyfully decorated children's room. The two central rooms have double beds, one with a stunning view of the valley of Carlux (featured in the photo section), and the other (with the possibility of two double beds) with a wonderful view of Carlux's beautifully restored XVII century church. The charming full bathroom on this floor is fitted with delicate hand made Italian tiles and an exotic hardwood floor.

Baby and young child equipment (high chair, crib, bed bottle warmers etc.) is available.

Serene, charming, and comfortable
We are three seniors, who spent 9 nights at this property, located in the small village of Carlux, a 20-minute drive from Sarlat-la-Canada. Its relatively remote location might not appeal to all, but we loved it. As advertised, the home adjoins the castle wall, in the very center of the hill-top village, next to the Mairie (townhall) and a short distance from the church. There is a bakery and a small grocery store a short walk down the hill. The home is very spacious, well maintained and comfortable. It is tastefully and very completely furnished, combining antique pieces with very comfortable chairs, sofas, and beds. There is a large kitchen with a beautiful fireplace, but also an American-sized refrigerator, dishwasher, and stove. The bathrooms are nice. The terrace allows for outside dining; there one can enjoy the jacuzzi while gazing upon the castle walls and the beautiful countryside. The owner and manager both provided exemplary customer service. Over the past several years, we have stayed at numerous VRBO/Homeaway properties in Europe and elsewhere. We agree that this is our favorite!

Stunning, full of character
The property definitely lived up to our expectations with beautiful rooms, the kitchen and lounge especially with large fire place and wood burner, a lovely terrace, incredible views and a very inviting hot tub. Sat on the top of the hill in Carlux it's a short walk to the little supermarket, boulangerie, bar and restaurant. A short drive or cycle down the hill is the river and cycle paths that take you through the countryside past fields, Castles, ruins and amazing scenery. I would highly recommend the cottage and would definitely love to stay there again, we had a wonderful holiday.

Blissful Springtime in Carlux
The photo sold me from the moment I saw it. The "cottage" with blue shutters was everything my husband and I had hoped for during our month-long stay in the Dordogne River Valley. It is well situated on the main square of a small, quiet village and is close to larger towns and myriad tourist sites. The house was just as charming as pictured. Everything was tidy and in good working order. If there was a problem, the property manager was always promptly responsive as well as a good resource for local attractions and restaurant recommendations. The kitchen was well equipped and spacious. We hardly used the upstairs bedrooms and bath, but the house can easily accommodate up to 6 adults or a family with small children. WiFi and TV reception were good. We were perfectly situated for taking long walks or riding bikes along the country roads or the bike path, which wound through the farmlands and woods in between the larger towns. Evening soaks in the Jacuzzi on the private terrace were a treat after a long day of sightseeing. The property manager speaks limited English, but we were able to communicate with him by phone and e-mail in our equally limited French. We also felt free to contact the owner, who would promptly communicate our needs to the property manager, so we were never left in the lurch when we needed assistance. I have no hesitation recommending this property to adults or families looking for a relaxing week or longer in the Perigord Noir region. Suggestions for improvement: We were sent a house reference manual by e-mail, but a hard copy in the house, including grocery shopping locations and restaurant recommendations, is needed. Some of the appliances were tricky to figure out, and there were no manuals, so be sure to have the property manager show you how to use everything.

A most charming vacation home!
This is an absolutely charming home decorated with beautiful antiques. Nice patio allowing us to eat most of our meals outside. Plus imagine taking a hot tub with looking onto illuminated walls of an 11th century castle! The village is lovely, with only a few stores, but all of them top quality, including a boulangerie/patisserie, boucher, and epicerie. Plus the surrounding area is incredibly delightful; lots of hiking trails through villages, and if you think the French are not friendly, your perceptions will be realigned. Plus if you are a cyclist, you can rent bikes nearby and ride to your heart's delight on small country lanes, as well as a dedicated bike/hiking path along the Dordogne. Highly recommended, just hope your reservation doesn't interfere with our hopes to return!

CHARMING HOUSE
We stayed for 8 nights and we had a wonderfull time. The village of Carlux is quiet and beautyfull. The house was everything the descriptions offered, ...cozy with a maginificent view attached to a XII century castle. Bedrooms and bathrooms were excellent. We had wonderfull time in the Perigord, and the house made the difference.
