"Penstowe Park is in the village of Kilkhampton which is 8km from Bude on the A39. The village is full of Cornish character and is only a few minutes walk away from the cottage. It has 2 pubs, fish & chip shop, pizza shop, a post office and 2 grocery shops. There is also a Chinese Restaurant on the outskirts for takeaways. The area also offers excellent opportunities for walking, golfing, fishing, horse-riding and of course, surfing for which Bude is internationally famous. Penstowe Park has been awarded 4 stars by the English Tourism Council and is set in beautiful surroundings with a 19th Century Manor House which has many facilities most of which are free to use for patrons of the holiday park including free wi-fi, an Indoor swimming pool, Jacuzzi and Sauna Badminton, Squash, Indoor Bowls, Tennis Courts. They also have a nightly cabaret, bingo and of course George the Dragon!"

This year was our 5th stay at the cottage we have always found it very clean comfortable & very well equiped with everything you would need for a self catering holiday we just love it & Jean the owner is very nice & helpfull we will be returning again in the very near future with our 2 pooches.

A great place for a family holiday

We hadn't stayed in Cornwall before but had once visited Bude so knew it had a few good sandy beaches which is why we picked this cottage in Kilkhampton as a place to stay. We were not disappointed. Although it is not owned by Penstowe Park resort we were still able to use the bar and restaurant facilities including the kids club with George the Dragon which our children absolutely loved. We didn't use either of the swimming pools or any of the sports courts as these were not included in the rental and since there is so much to do in the area we didn't feel that we needed to. It's worth pointing out that if you book through Penstowe Holidays you get them included but you end up paying more for your holiday so we took the view that we didn't want to pay for something we wouldn't use so booked through Owners Direct.
Even though we stayed for the first week of September the weather was so good that we managed to spend a couple of days on the beach. For when it's not beach weather there is so much to do in the area. We visited the Milky Way and Hidden Valley theme parks and the fishing villages of Clovelly and Boscastle. If you have children we can highly recommend Gooseham Barton pony trekking which is just a short drive from Kilkhampton. What we found useful about the cottage was the number of leaflets that had been collected and left in a bowl in the lounge letting us know what day trips we could go on.
We can't comment on how good the cooking facilities in the cottage are as we ate out or had takeaway every night but the kitchen was well equipped and the whole house was very clean.
If you have young children and are looking for a place to stay in the area I can thoroughly recommend this property.

I'm saddened to say we were disappointed with this property. It was damp and smelled throughout our stay. We paid extra for towels and bedding to be provided and only got 3towels between 4 people. The shower didn't work for the 1st 2days if our stay (although I have to say that the owner and the plumber couldn't have been more helpful over this). When we arrived the downstairs was riddled with flies -we ended up having to hang 3 sticky things up to catch them all-not too pleasant when you are eating! The furniture was 'adequate', certainly not 'comfortable' although the kitchen was well equipped.

I sound like we had an awful time..... Perhaps with good weather we would have spent less time in the property, but as it was, we had almost permanent rain and needed to spend some substantial time indoors.

I believe we paid more than we should have for the house.

The food we had in the restaurant on Penstowe itself was very, very good and the staff in there, and in the bar, were lovely. Cost for the family to have use of the indoor pool for the week was prohibitive, so we didn't bother.

The 2local pubs both do excellent food, not cheap but really good pub food. Both are well worth a visit.

So, would we go back to this area? Absolutely.
Would we go back to this property? Absolutely not.

We are a well travelled family, 2adults, 2 x 15year olds. We hire properties around 4or 5times a year. We are realistic and definitely not fussy. This property just doesn't come up to scratch for the money we paid.

Owner's Response: I am disappointed to hear that this guest did not enjoy their stay at the property and would like to say this is the first negative feedback received in years. I am basing this on the Visitors Book within the property where guests are invited to leave comments.

With regard to the damp smell, this can occur when guests do not use the dehumidifier provided which costs pence to run and because the lounge/cooking area is all in one condensation can accumulate. If the dehumidifier is used this usually removes any damp smell within 24 hours. Obviously with the wet weather this may have exacerbated the problem. It should also be borne in mind that the property is not ‘lived in’ for many weeks. I would suggest that there was no visible sign of damp such as mould and that the property has no signs of damp.

With regard to the towels, I arranged for the supply 3 bath towels and 2 hand towels and asked the guest to let me know if they required more prior to their visit but never received an answer.

Concerning the shower, the previous guest reported a problem and I had it replaced with a new one the next day, before this guest’s arrival. It became evident that the problem lay with the supply/demand at peak times due to the busiest season ever at the site and this was due to the waterboard and beyond my control. Similarly I have no control over the flies and would welcome any suggestions to avoid these.

If the guest could suggest what could have been done to improve their stay I would be happy to take this into consideration.


Activity and Interests


Duckpool beach, 4 miles north of Bude is a picturesque cove with a pebbly beach. Sandymouth is 3 miles from Penstowe Park and is a large pebbly beach owned by the National Trust. Bude beach (6 miles from Penstowe) is a large sandy beach popular with surfers. Widemouth bay is is a large family beach with plenty of amenities and coastal views.


Because of the location own transport is required. However, there is a bus stop outside the London Inn in the village (7 minutes walk from the cottage). Local services (to Bude, Stratton) provided by Jackett's Coaches and run every 2 hours. Stagecoach provides services for slightly further afield. Enquire at the local post office for full details of bus services. There is no local train station or airport.


Kilkhampton - 5-10 minute walk, Bude - 6 miles, Clovelly - 8 miles, Holsworthy - 10 miles, Bideford - 20 miles, Barnstaple - 30 miles, Tintagel - 22 miles, Plymouth - 45 miles, Newquay - 50 miles, Eden Project - 45 miles.

Further Details:

Holsworthy is a local market town with an outdoor market held on Wednesdays with approximately 50 stalls. For more retail therapy visit Altantic Village (2 miles north of Bideford) which has various outlets including M&S, Cadburys and Asda. In Bude there is a Sainsburys supermarket as well as a Morrisons on the outskirts which has a petrol station (cheapest in area). Within Kilkhampton is a Post Office, two churches and two pubs (The London Inn which has recently been refurbished and The New Inn) both of which serve excellent food. If you prefer to eat in there is a local chip shop (Gilletts Chippy - on Facebook with nightly special offers) a Chinese takeaway on the edge of the village with ample parking. There are two small grocery shops open 'til late evening. Two main adventure parks in the area are The BIG Sheep & Milky Way Adventure Park, Bideford. Hartland Abbey and Gardens is well worth a visit as is RHS Rosemoor Gardens. Lydford Gorge (near Okehampton) with its famous White Lady Waterfall and Devil’s Cauldron which is renowned for its scenic beauty is a must and worth the 50 minute drive. Boscastle is a must and only a 30 minute drive, do visit St Nectan's Glen on the way, it is amazing (and don't forget to leave your own stone)!!!

  • Notes on accommodation: The property is amongst a row of four cottages situated on the edge of Penstowe Park Holiday Park located at the end of Penstowe Road. There is a large parking bay adjacent to the cottages. The quiet surroundings with trees and grassed areas create a relaxing atmosphere. Outside: The private grounds provide a safe environment for children to run and play. Dogs however, must be kept on a lead at all times. The Manor House has many facilities available to guests including free access to the cabaret suite. The indoor heated pool and gym facilities incur an additional charge. The Stable Bar has an outdoor pool and bar/restaurant. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linen and towels are not provided. The property will be cleaned before and after your departure. However we do expect you to leave the property in a clean and tidy condition and to remove all rubbish (large bins are provided on the site).
