This well located holiday cottage sleeps 6 easily in three good sized bedrooms. Featured in the Guardian Travel supplement "Cool Cottages to Stay". The living room has a wood burner, and the farmhouse style kitchen leads out to the sunny decked courtyard garden. Wifi is free. Whilst situated in a quiet lane, the cottage is only two minutes walk from the beach, estuary walks, public house, cafes and oyster bar. Within five minutes walk are more cafes, restaurants. Sailing is a key attraction, with dingy launch two minutes away. Dogs welcome. Mersea is ideal for a family beach holiday, with plenty for children to do: crabbing, swimming, art classes. Mersea attracts windsurfers, sailors, kite surfers and canoeists, as well as being good for cyclists and walkers. The cottage is also great for winter breaks, to cosy up in front of the fire after visiting the local nature reserves. Plus you will be staying on a real island!

There are one set of stairs. The property is not suitable for wheelchair users. It is suitable for elderly people if they can manage the stairs. There are two steps up into the decked garden. The nearness of cafes etc would suit elderly people
The sunny decked garden is fully enclosed , and equipped with garden furniture for 6 people. Well stocked with plants,passionflower and grapevine, it is a perfect quiet retreat with a glass of wine. There is a barbecue, washing line, area to hose off dogs and welly boots, plus hanging space for wetsuits.
Important notes on accommodation
This is a non-smoking cottage. The accommodation is light and airy, stylish without being "precious", so that you will feel comfortable bringing dogs and children here. The bedrooms are all very good sizes, with comfortable beds and white bedlinen. They all have wardrobes and storage space. Bathrooms are clean and uncluttered, with spacious modern showers. The kitchen is big enough to seat everyone around a large table, and well equipped. The garden is private, quiet and enclosed for dogs and children.

Once you have emailed me a request, I will send you an invoice for the deposit (30% of the holiday). The remainder is paid 28 days before your holiday. We also ask for a damage deposit cheque of £200 at this time, to be returned un cashed after your stay. We charge £20 per dog.

About the area
The beach is a two minute walk, and is pebbly with sand. Crabbing is done from the pontoon, a three minute walk. The best swimming in the sea is a five minute car drive or twenty minute walk along the beach.
Colchester 8 miles away has a golf course.
How to get there
Nearest airport is Stansted, an hour away. London is an hours drive, or 50 minutes by train. Harwich port is 45 minutes away.
Historic Colchester, with a modern shopping centre, cinema, leisure centre, zoo is only 8 miles away. Ipswich, similar, is thirty minutes drive. There are picturesque estuary villages , wildlife reserves such as Fingringhoe wick and Merseas Cudmore grove. Take the foot ferry from East Mersea to Brightlingsea, . Within easy driving are beautiful historic local towns such as Halstead, and villages like Lavenham and Kersey. Plus Constable country is only half an hours drive.
Within two minute and five minute walks are quiet country walks, two public houses,which also serve food, two seafood bars, two sailing clubs, two cafes. One of the cafes sells wine, milk etc. A short 15 minute walk or 5 minute drive brings you to the centre of West Mersea with supermarkets, banks, post office, cafes, delicatessens, petrol station, restaurants, takeaways, etc. The island is an attraction for windsurfers, canoeists, sailors, kite surfers, paddle boarders, cyclists and walkers. Plus Colchester, a main town with leisure centre, cinema, zoo and high street shops is only 8 ,miles away.

Spent 9 days here recently, comfy warm and well furnished in good location for waterfront. Log burner a nice extra and very quiet area, hardly heard the gales outside. Coast Inn nearby friendly with good food, as was the nearby Oyster Bar. Company Shed not very attractive looking and seems to attract the London Hooray Henrys, so did not use, other eateries supported by locals. Blackwater Pearl cafe good and local, Arts Cafe in town good but pricier and cafe along at beachut area very good, Good local butcher, fruit and veg shop and baker, also 2 delis. Found local people very friendly and helpful and traffic not too busy. If in Colchester take care at 5 roundabout area on Clacton road, 2 main roundabouts close together with several mini roundabouts incorporated in system as well. a bit like Wacky Races. Maldon worth a visit for boating heritage and marsh walks Will be back again

"Lovely seaside bolthole"
Rental places with a seaview are hard to come by in Mersea but this cottage a stone's throw from the harbour was the next best thing. Very close to both the Company Shed and West Mersea Oyster Bar as well as two great pubs there isn't a shortage of places to eat local seafood. The cottage is spacious and well equipped with huge beds and two bathrooms. A woodburner in the kitchen/diner/living room keeps it cosy in the colder weather and an enclosed garden is handy for dogs and children.

A lovely cottage, tasteful decoration, fully equipped, big comfortable beds and a woodburner - oh, and not to forget - very clean and well cared for! An ideal place for a holiday either snuggling up in the warm in Winter or sitting out in the lovely, private, decked garden in Summer. The cottage was even nicer than we were expecting, customer service was really friendly and good and I would definitely recommend Anchorage Mews.

What a lovely bolthole. The cottage was ideally placed - one minute to wak to the seafront. perfect for popping along to see the sunset and to stretch our legs in the morning. The woodburner is very cosy and the beds very comfortable. The owner was very helpful and responded to emails very quickly. I went with a group of friends and we loved the estuary walks, seafood restuaurants and local pubs. I would recommend this property and am hoping to return this year with my family.

About the Owner
Despite living in Suffolk for years, we didn't discover Mersea Island until four years ago. We fell in love with it! Unspoilt, beautiful estuary walks and sunsets, fabulous seafood especially the oysters, friendly people, lovely cafes, pubs and restaurants, swimming in the sea, watching the boats...perfect. It's our family holiday home, and with grandchildren on the horizon it will be a wonderful place for children to have a proper, old fashioned, British seaside holiday. New to the market for the season of 2013, we have tried it out on friends and family. We have had such fun, relaxing times on this special island, and we hope you do too.

Why this location?
The really special thing about Mersea Island is....it's a bit of a well kept secret. It isn't "Hampstead-by-the-sea" as some parts of the east Anglia coast have been labelled now. It's not overly touristy, there are lots of local people born and bred here, there is still a fishing and sail making industry here. There are lots of independent local shops. The bottom line is, it hasn't been spoilt. It's peaceful, but not remote. There is lots to do, but equally, it's somewhere you can kick back and relax. The sea air does that. As we drive over the "strood" (the Roman roadway on to the island), it's like we pull up the drawbridge, take a deep breath, and r-e-l-a-x
What are the unique benefits of the property?
One of our favourite things we like to do, is take a glass of wine with us down to the sea, all of a minutes amble, sit on the sea wall and watch the sun go down over the water. When we have little ones at the cottage, a favourite past-time is crabbing off the pontoon, making sandcastles, swimming in the sea, going out on the water taxi, taking toddlers for an art class session in the town (then leaving them there with Dad, while mum pops next door to the art cafe for a cappuccino with friends). We become very lazy, popping round the corner to the Blackwater Pearl cafe for a cooked breakfast, before walking the dogs to get up an appetite for scallops and oysters for lunch at the Oyster bar. It's a hard life....
