Casa Modesta is unique. Winter and summer, guests will find they should never have to compromise on the levels of comfort they enjoy at home. From the joy of cooking in the fabulously well-appointed kitchen to the bliss of rejuvenating sleep afforded by the luxurious beds, everything has been carefully planned and designed to make this a genuinely five star experience. As its name suggests, Casa Modesta presents itself as a simple cottage which, although recently rebuilt, retains much of its original character. Modesty, however usually belies a beautiful secret waiting to be discovered and our property is no exception to the rule. Walking through the front door of Casa Modesta is like opening a jewel box. The natural neutral tones of the building's facade do not prepare you for the richness of colour and texture inside. Outside, guests can take a walk through rows of almond trees or sit by the swimming pool and watch the sunset turn the vineyards orange and purple.

There is no doubt that Sicily has many grand palazzos and villas which offer holidaymakers spectacular views, and spacious accommodation. Along with the hefty rental charge however comes, inevitably, dodgy plumbing, uncomfortable beds, ill equipped kitchens and no central heating. The owners of this property have prioritised comfort over everything.

The love and care poured into the restoration of this rustic almond pickers’ storehouse is evident from the natural render and stone detailing on the outside of the building to the double height feature stone wall in the main living area. Interior walls are plastered with stucco rather than rendered with concrete which gives them a luxurious cool smooth feel. The walls of the main building are two feet thick which ensures the heat of the day is kept out and, in winter months when the usually balmy days become cooler at night, all is cosy and warm inside.

In the kitchen guests will find everything they need to transform the incomparable local fish, vegetables and fruit into healthy and delicious feasts. There is a top of the range under counter oven/grill, a gas hob, fridge freezer, dishwasher and plenty of cutlery and utensils, pots and pans. Opening the large cupboard doors in the living area will reveal shelves of beautiful crockery and glassware. Meals on the terrace are made all the more magical when the table is adorned with jewel coloured glasses, exotically glazed dishes and, of course, plenty of candles and lanterns.

The main living area also has a comfortable sofa and a television for evening relaxation. There are plenty of good books to share around and a Sonos sound system to provide the soundtrack to your evening.

The master bedroom has a king size oak canopy bed. The bed linen is crisp white Egyptian cotton with a super comfortable Eve mattress. There is a large French antique wardrobe and a glass sliding door leading out to a private terrace. The luxuriously appointed en suite bathroom has two basins, shower and toilet.

The mezzanine provides one of the many hidden delights of Casa Modesta. A stunning picture window which spans almost the whole width of the upper floor. The view from this window is gorgeous, especially at sunset. Guests can stay in two singles or one superking bed and will enjoy bed linen and mattresses just as luxurious as in the master bedroom. There is also a trundle bed for an extra child. Privacy is provided by a panel of Indian carved screens extending across the mezzanine.

The large family bathroom can be found just off the main living area. It has an oversized shower and a wardrobe style linen cupboard.

In the utility room, guests will find a washing machine, iron and ironing board and general cleaning materials.

There are three air conditioning units regulating the temperature of the main living area, mezzanine and master bedroom and under floor heating in the living area, master bedroom and both bathrooms to provide gentle even warmth in the cooler months.

Excellent villa
Well restored farmhouse, but relatively small, however you want for little, all quality fittings in the house. The star is the out side space, swimming pool excellent, all problems we had were resolved quickly, even taking away stray dog! The area is not a primary tourist place, more a market garden region, tomato’s especially, locally they seem to an issue with rubbish, as the local council has abandoned collection, but the villa is immaculate.

Serene Sicilian retreat
The house, gardens and pool were fabulous and perfect for a family month away to enjoy a slice of living in Sicily. The communication and assistance provided by Vanessa was brilliant and so helpful and helped us to fully enjoy our stay here. The location set almost the olive and almond groves and overlooking the vines surrounded by fruit trees, herbs and cacti was wonderfully calming and so peaceful. It was great to meet the neighbouring farmer and see the harvesting of the grapes and olives on our doorstep which is so much what this area is about. The fresh produce especially local Pachino tomatoes were wonderful and perfect for staying in cooking a lovely dinner and enjoying with the local Nero D’Avola wine. With the small town only a 5 min drive away for everyday essential groceries and fresh bread and San Lorenzo beach club so close with a superb sandy beach and the beauty of baroque Noto only 20mins away for a late breakfast or leisurely lunch and stroll we couldn’t have wished for a better location. We managed to visit Marzamemi, Capo Passero , Ragusa, Modica, Scicli and Chiaramonte Gulfi all from the house by car and recommend them all especially Ristorante Majore in Chiaramonte Gulfi for a truly authentic Sicilian lunch focussed on local specialty pork. Time flew and we didn’t want to leave!

Nearly Impossible to leave - perfect and peaceful
Our best summary description of Casa Modesta is "harmonious". It is a lovely house in a delightful garden setting surrounded by olive and almond trees with vines being grown next door. Very peaceful and relaxing. The house's design has been carefully considered and is maintained to a high standard. It is very well equipped, clean and comfortable including outdoor seating. Vanessa is a great host and provided lots of helpful information and advice which meant we got the most out of our local sight-seeing, restaurants etc. The welcome pack and opportunity to purchase a Sicilian supper for your arrival was very welcome, plentiful and to be recommended. We also enjoyed the Fuedo Maccari local wine... you can't get much more local! Casa Modesta more than lives up to its five star rating, we had a very happy stay, and on discovering no-one was coming in immediately after us, had major problems refraining from staying on. We will certainly return.

Beautifully designed character house in unspoilt countryside, peace and good vibes
We loved Casa Modesta. It is set in a flower filled garden, with small lawns, terraces and surrounded by a landscape of olive trees, vineyards, scattered traditional farmhouses and view towards the distant hills above Noto. We forego the local beaches for the lovely swimming pool, peace and quiet - even the neighbouring farmer bashed his olive trees quietly ! There is so much historic interest close by, Noto Antica is worth exploring, atmospheric and hidden away, rambling ruins along the ridge. Vanessa’s detailed info was great, saved time and was very useful - the App for finding bakery etc really good, fresh warm ciabatta even at 5pm! The local wine, red and rose Fuedo Maccari is quite delicious - bought from the roadside ‘cantina’ you can see from the house. Vanessa was very helpful and quick to respond to any queries at the booking stage and whilst we were there. We would love to return.

We live in London and have 3 children aged between 31 and 17. Steve, my husband, has been visiting Sicily for over 25 years for his work importing tomatoes for UK supermarkets and introduced me to this unique and very beautiful area in 2005. The area is one of the few remaining in the Mediterranean that still offers an authentic experience of rural life, almost unchanged for hundreds of years. Life in this corner of Sicily is still very much connected to the produce of the land and the sea.

Why they chose this property

The house and its five acres of almonds and olive trees offers complete tranquillity and seclusion and yet is less than 10 minutes drive to the enchanting fishing village of Marzamemi, several stunning beaches and a wide range of shops and restaurants. The house is also a great base from which to explore the architectural and historical gems of southeast Sicily.

What makes this property unique

When we started out on this venture we had some clear aims. Our first priority was to develop a high-end rental property with a secondary upside of somewhere the family could spend their holidays. Our second aim was to provide for our guests the same level of comfort and style as we find in our favourite hotels (this is not something we could readily find in rental properties in the Mediterranean). Top quality bedding and furnishings create the luxury finish inside the house and outside the glass mosaic deck level pool with stone terraces complete the five star experience. There are stunning views of vineyards and rolling farmland in every direction. Off season underfloor heating means the house is always warm and cosy and there is never a shortage of hot water for showers.
