A wonderful relaxing holiday in a well appointed farmhouse. A quiet location but within walking distance of a local bar. The nearest village is a 3k walk, or an easy ride on a bike away. The most noise you hear are the chickens when you go to feed them or when the kids put their music on and forget the headphones, rush hour is when 2 tractors pass on the lane! The hotel in the local village has a fabulous restaurant, recommend the scallops! Brantome Police Horse rescue is worth a visit, if only for the scones. The work they are doing is wonderful. I would heartily recommend La Varenne for a stay with friends or familly.

"perfect holiday break"
A beautiful Gite for a perfectly relaxing break. The house is first class with everything anyone could want. The sunshine and the pool combined to create the perfect environment and Joy and John were wonderful hosts. The only downside is having to come back to real life. A fabulous venue def 5 star.

We would like to thank Joy and John for such a warm welcome to their beautiful home. Nothing was too much trouble for them, even sneaking out to buy a second baby swing so that both babies could play safely together. I don't think I have ever stayed in such a well equipped house. Being a cook this was very refreshing. With such a large group (10) there was more than enough room for all of us to find our own space. The children loved it. Plenty of room to run around in complete safety. The area is spectacular and brantome absolutely beautiful.

"La Varenne Farmhouse"
We have just returned from a family holiday at La Varenne. Initially we were concerned about driving on the right, but the roads were superb (quiet with no speed bumps, traffic lights or cameras!). The house was easy to find (with Joy’s help – she emailed the route plan and a map of the local area in advance). On arrival we had a warm welcome from Joy and John and a tour of the house. The Farmhouse is really quirky, full of character, very clean and well maintained (the website photos don’t do it justice). It was ample size for our large family, with four large bedrooms, two bathrooms and downstairs toilet. The spacious dining kitchen was well equipped with every appliance and utensil you could possibly need, including a dishwasher and washing machine! Joy supplied us with plenty of towels and even loaned us some beach towels for the pool. The grandchildren loved collecting eggs from the hens and enjoyed eating the egg and soldiers even more. The peaceful location made it the perfect setting to relax round the pool and we also made use of the outdoor BBQ. Joy and John were happy to loan us four bikes so we managed to enjoy a leisurely cycle around the village. We visited nearby bustling markets in Branton and Brantome. We particularly enjoyed the picturesque village of Brantome, so much so, that we returned the same evening and enjoyed our best meal of the week at Le Coureur Indien (not to be mistaken for an Indian restaurant). We also ate locally in Saint Pardoux La Riviere at Hotel De France. This meal was lovely and great value at 13 euros for three courses. The grandchildren and adults loved the trip to Perigord Vert Adventure Park, set in a forest in Nontron. Here, they experienced numerous outdoor activities, including climbing and zip wiring - myself and Ian gave this one a miss! The Farmhouse has WiFi, Sky Television, and variety of DVDs and board games to suit everyone, so there was always something to on the nights we stayed in. The log fire and unlimited supply of logs made the lounge really cosy on an evening. Overall, we had a fabulous week, Joy and John were really helpful and we can highly recommend the farmhouse.

"WOW WHAT A PLACE"
we have just got back for our holiday and that is just what is was... a holiday!! it was very easy to find and only an hour away from limoges airport. upon arrival we were greeted by joy and john in an very welcoming manner, joy showed myself and the kids around the house while john and my hubby were chatting about the area and journey etc. the house is absolutely fantastic everything u could possibly want and need on a holiday, the gite is traditionally french which is lovely, the bedrooms are very good sizes and the ones on the top floor are gorgeous and quirky with the exposed beams. the bedding and towels etc were nice, of good quality and there were plenty available.the kitchen was very well equipped with things i havent even got at home lol. everywhere was lovely and clean and well maintained. the pool got a lot of use and the kids loved helping joy and john do little bits around the garden. there were bits we didnt even explore as we were having such a lovely time around the pool as the weather was amazing. we shall explore those bits next time we go, we are in the process of booking for next year already!! you can do as much (there is loads to do) or as little as u want the choice is yours. we went to the grottes de villars which was nice and brantome is a lovely place to visit,we went around the abbey and on a boat trip around brantome. we went to a lovely bistro in mialet which is not far away, they were very friendly and accommodating. my boys wanted to try frogs legs and snails so they went shopping the following day and got some in for them to try the following night. we really didnt want to leave on saturday as we enjoyed it that much :( cant recommend them highly enough ,our overall experience was fantastic and cant wait to go back!!

"Our daughter arrived before us and called to say 'Mum, it's lovely, you'll love it', and she was right. We had a party for my 80th birthday on the terrace: it was wonderful. We had room for close family to stay for a few days. John and Joy couldn't have been more welcoming or helpful. When we went out anywhere, we would call the farmhouse 'home'.
It's so peaceful, but not too far away from anything, and we had such good weather. Our daughter stayed with us, and she loved the pool and the walks. We stayed for 2 months, and didn't want to leave. We will definitely go back."

"Wonderful hosts, wonderful accommodation. Joy and John were kindness itself, and went out of their way to make sure that we had a memorable holiday. I would definitely recommend La Varenne to anyone considering the Dordogne."

About the Owner
We bought La Varenne as a holiday home 'with a project', and love it so much we moved out here 3 years later. We feel very lucky.
Year property purchased: 2006
Why this location?
We renovated the barn intending to create a maison des amis for family and friends, then we moved in - 'down-sizing'?!! We now have a beautiful 4-bedroomed farmhouse, perfect for families and friends, and anyone who likes a bit more space. With good broadband access, we're able to work from home, and walk, swim or cycle in the afternoon - which is just as well, as the local restaurants are wonderful.
What are the unique benefits of the property?
The Dronne Valley is beautiful. We're on the edge of a peaceful village, rather than the middle of nowhere, and are just a short drive from everything we need. The local café is only a 5 minute walk away, and improving our French is a great reason to visit!
