Near the foot of the Royal Mile, the historic thoroughfare which links Edinburgh Castle at the top with the Royal Palace of Holyrood at the bottom, lies the garden of Dunbar's Close, a tranquil and little-known public space, reconstructed in the style of a 17th century formal garden. Set in a typical 19th Century stone tenement, this stylish and comfortable apartment is on the 3rd floor with views from the quiet back bedroom over Dunbar’s Close Gardens and the adjacent Canongate Kirk yard and on to Calton Hill with its iconic Edinburgh monuments. For visitors all the museums, galleries, monuments and shops of Edinburgh’s historic old town are within walking distance. There are plenty of nearby cafes and restaurants and for those who enjoy the outdoors, the 650 acre Holyrood Park lies less than 10 minutes walk away.The apartment is ideally located for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Winter Festivals and is only a short distance from the main train and bus stations.

The property is situated on the third floor of a typical Scottish tenement with no lift and is therefore unsuitable for the elderly or those with mobility difficulties.
The flat is situated at the entrance of Dunbar's Close Gardens - a beautiful public space re-created in the style of a 17th century formal garden, with topiary trees and shrubs and protected seating areas to make the most of the sunshine! These gardens are open to the public on most days.

About the area
There are a number of beautiful beaches within an hour's drive of Edinburgh.
There are many private and public golf courses in and around Edinburgh. Further information is available in the apartment.
How to get there
10 minutes walk to Waverley Station and 15 minutes to the Bus Station in St Andrew's Square. The airport is about 30-40 minutes by car/taxi or you can take the Airport shuttle which runs every 15 minutes. It terminates at Waverley station and youcan walk from there. The number 35 bus from the airport passes in front of the flat but is slower than the shuttle. Public transport in Edinburgh is excellent.
An hour to Glasgow and the Borders by car. The Trossachs and Loch Lomond are around 1.5 hours away and the Highlands lie within half a day's drive. You can get to and from Loch Ness in a day (quite a long one!)
The apartment is situated in an historic area with lots of pubs, restaurants (from the very expensive to the cheap and cheerful), bars and cafes. The area is ideal for exploring on foot. If you really like to stretch your legs there is over 600 acres of park and hillside in nearby Holyrood Park.

"Wonderful setting in Edinburgh"
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this lovely apartment in Edinburgh. The apartment itself was recently updated and met all of our needs. Well worth the three floors of stairs you climb to get there. And the location couldn’t have been better. We were located right in the heart of the old section of the city within walking distance to pubs, restaurants, sights, etc. It’s also located a short distance from the train station which was important to us. Sandra, the owner, was very responsive to our needs and went way out of her way to make our stay memorable. We were in Edinburgh during Mother’s Day and Sandra had flowers delivered to the apartment to help us celebrate. Also our son had sent a Mother’s Day card to my wife, which unfortunately, got lost in the mail and never made it to Scotland. After we left, Sandra spent a lot of time checking for the card and was ready to forward it to us if it ever showed up. We certainly appreciated her extra efforts on our behalf. We would certainly stay at the this apartment again and would recommend it to anyone visiting Edinburgh.

About the Owner
We are a Scottish/Australian couple who have lived and worked in both countries. We moved to Edinburgh as a family 30 years ago. I was employed by the University of Edinburgh in the International Office until my recent retirement and my husband was Director of IT for the Scottish Courts until he joined me in retirement in Autumn 2013. We both love the city and have enjoyed showing it off to many friends and relations who have visited us over the years. This was one of the main reasons for buying our holiday apartment in Dunbar's Close.
We enjoy travel and have used the Owners Direct site ourselves for many holidays finding the combination of having your own space and facilities a great and more relaxing way to holiday.

Why this location?
We are keen gardeners and finding a flat right in the heart of the Old Town with an amazing view over Dunbar's Close Garden was just too good an opportunity to miss. We are hoping that all our visitors will enjoy the experience too.
What are the unique benefits of the property?
Almost all the Edinburgh sights are within walking distance of the apartment. You can be in Holyrood Park, the Palace and the Scottish Parliament building in less than 5 minutes. Straight up the hill is the castle and during the Festival there are loads of venues within striking distance. The lower end of the Royal Mile is, however, much quieter than the upper end and with the bedroom windows overlooking Dunbar's Close Garden you are far less likely to be disturbed by crowds and tourists and entertainers! There's a supermarket just around the corner and loads of excellent bars and restaurants nearby.
