    Charming 200 Year Old Stone Rural Cottages are set in rural countryside at the end of a quiet lane. The cottages are grouped around a courtyard, together with the former farmhouse, which is occupied by resident owners. The hamlet is surrounded by Norman cider orchards, rolling fields and stream near by. Wildlife is everywhere. Red squirrels, birds of prey, herons and hares Near by villages of Carrouges and Ranes are 5 kilometres away with all facilities. Town of Argentan is 20 kilometres. D.Day beaches, The Bayeaux tapestry, Mont St.Michel and the Loire Chateaux are all easily reached.

    The Stables Sleeps 6+, 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms

    The front door leads directly into a pretty sitting room. A wood burning stove provides a cosy atmosphere. Sofa and easy chairs with coffee table, side tables and lamps. TV, Sky box and DVD and various games are provided also Wifi. On the right of front door, an opening leads into a well equipped kitchen/dining room, which provides ample sitting, a full size gas oven and hob, small fridge freezer, washing machine and microwave oven. Upstairs there are 3 bedrooms. One double room with an en-suite bathroom and 2 twin rooms and bathroom.
    A cot and highchair is available on request. To the front of the cottage is a patio area with garden furniture and barbecue. The cottage is centrally heated. Linen is provided.

    The cottages have private patio areas, with garden furniture and barbecue's. The courtyard is gravelled with room for parking. Shallow steps lead up to the large hedged garden, which has fruit trees, flower beds and area for playing badminton etc.

    Important notes on accommodation

    The Stables has central heating and a wood burning stove. Bakehouse is heated by the wood burning stove, also has low ceilings and beams. Children need supervision, but have a large lawn garden to play in.

    Notes on prices
    Prices are per week, deposit of 25% on booking in Sterling balance 4 weeks before arrival. We accept payment by bank transfer and Paypal. There is a 3.5% surcharge when paying by Paypal Discounts are available for bookings of two weeks or more and also if both properties are booked together. Please enquire for further information.

    Changeover day
    Changeover day is Saturday, arriving after 4 pm and leaving before 10 am.

    Booking can be made by email or website. Prices are per week in sterling 25% on booking and balance 4 weeks before arrival. Discount available for bookings of two week booking or more. The cottages are closed from November to March as not suitable over winter due to our access lane.

    About the area

    At La Ferte Mace, 20 kilometres there is a fresh water lake with a sandy beach and play area. There are pedalos - windsurfing, sailing,fishing, a lovely walk around the lake, mini golf and go karts. a riding centre close by. Also has a new indoor swimming pool in the town.Historical Normandy beaches, 1 hour drive with the Port of Quisterham, Cabourg, Honfleur and Deauville are 2 hours drive. All beaches are sandy with play areas.

    There is a 9 hole golf course at Bagnoles d'lOrne, 25 kilometres away.

    How to get there
    Travel by car via Portsmouth/Caen (1 hour drive). Portsmouth/Le Havre (2 hour drive). Portsmouth/Cherbourg (3 hour drive). Dover/Calaise (4 hour drive).
    By air and hire car from Stanstead/Dinard (2 hour drive). Manchester/Exeter/Rennes (2 hour drive).

    Carrouges, 5 kms drive has a bank, post office, bakeries, chemist, 2 Superetts, 2 hotels, 4 restaurants, petrol station, and a Chateau. Ranes, also 5 kms drive has a bakery, chemist, post office with cash point superette with good butcher counter, 2 hotels, 3 restaurants, Bars,petrol station and a chateau with park that has tennis court, outdoor table tennis, mini golf, and play area. Trotting races on some Sundays. Argentan, 20 kms big town with all shops and trains to Paris in under 2 hours.

    Further Details
    The National Stud, Haras du Pin, is a must. 25 kilometres drive. Alencon is the main administrative town for the region and famouse for its lace museum. Nearby we have a family owned cider farm, where one can taste and see how cider is made. Not to be missed is the English owned Brewery at Joue du Bois, to taste the popular British Ales, also their thriving pub at Couptain where they have a sing along on Sunday evenings and very good Fish and Chips on Fridays. Another popular place to visit is Bagnoles de l'Orne a Spa town 25 kms drive, with a lake, Casino, upmarket shops, many restaurants and hotels. Also has adventure trails in the Forest around the town suitable for all ages
    There are many lovely gardens to visit and a cheese making house at Camembert 50 kilometres drive. We are also in the center of the Historic Area of the Battle of Normandy, with places like the Falaise Gap, 35 kilometres drive and at the other end of this, the Memorial at Montormel. As Gen. Eisenhower said on 23rd August 1944 'The battle for France was fought among the orchards and hedgegrows of this region of Normandy'. You can visit a market every day of the week, the furthest away is Alencon 30 kilometres drive. Please note that shops close on Sundays. In small villages, the main shops stay open until midday. Monday is also like a Sunday and most restaurants close on Monday.

    Wonderful stay in a wonderful home. Beautiful surroundings. Well within reach of all necessary amenities. Fun for children who cycled around many times. Great garden to relax and play in.

    As always a wonderful time in France. Excellent trip to Paris, train 11.00 from Argentan and back at 20.00, many hours of walking. Alencon market excellent for food as well. We will be back in October.( Lorraine Brinley 2008)

    About the Owner

    After living on a farm in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe for over 45 years, but with the change in Government, we decided to look for a place to retire. We had family living in the region who suggested we come and look near Carrouges. We came over on a 5 day visit and fell in love with everything and after looking at several places decided on L'Etre du Bois. Over the next 13 years, coming over for the summer months, we slowly renovated the buildings, until 2002, when we had to leave Zimbabwe as our farm was repossesed. Have lived here permanently since. We have had a fantastic time through all these years. Making good friends. with neighbours and artisans. We count ourselves so lucky to have found such a peaceful,tranquil region. To be woken in the morning by the birdsong is really magical.

    Why this location?

    L'Etre du Bois is in the center of the Natural Park Region of Normandy with it's acres of National Forest, stud farms, blossom orchards, hedged farmlands and lanes covered in wild flowers and beauty all around. We had visited many other parts of France in the past but this region has something special. Now after 22 years with nearly all the hard work behind us, we have a comfortable home and 2 holiday cottages to which guests return year after year.
