Detached House in Strete, near Dartmouth, Devon - Perfect Location For Families With A Dog, 5 Min Drive To The 3 Mile Long Beach Which Allows Dogs

A comfortable spacious house with great outside space, grass and decked for BBQ's. Perfect for two families with a dog. The house is set on the dramatic coastline of Start Bay half a mile from the beach. Strete is conveniently situated between two very different beaches. Blackpool Sands which is child friendly and dog free during the summer and Slapton sands which is 3 miles long allowing dogs all year with restaurants along the promenade. 35min drive to East Portlemouth is the closest for sandcastle beaches and dogs are allowed here too. Across on the foot ferry from East Portlemouth is Salcombe which comes alive in the summer. All within a 30 min drive are three bustling towns. Dartmouth, Kingsbridge and Totnes which are full of quaint streets, interesting shopping, excellent restaurants and inns, and a variety of boat trips and water activities. Over the water to Kingswear the south Devon railway can take you along the coast by steam. A little further afield and you can explore Dartmoor national park, fish the river dart, horse ride or have a round of Golf.

We had a fantastic time here, coming with our 3 boys between Christmas and the New Year. The house has plenty of space, and has a large kitchen area and a separate living room with TV etc, which is great on rainy days or when people need space. Another couple with a kid came for a few days and it was not crowded at all. You could easily come here with grandparents etc. The house is in a beautiful spot, with sea views, and wonderful unspoilt coastline all around. I imagine it must be fantastic with good Summer weather. We got lucky with some of the weather, and even had a proper day at the beach in late December. It's a special part of the country and as well as great walks there is lots of good sea food to be had if, like us, you like the fruits of the sea. As to the hosts, we couldn't have been made to feel more welcome - a freshly baked and delicious chocolate cake awaited us on arrival, which was a really wonderful touch. Both the owners are really nice, and Katy was extremely responsive and gave us loads of local tips, all of which were winners. She went the extra mile and even arranged a charming babysitter / child minder to enable us to feel like we had a true break.

Coast/Beach:

Slapton Sands is a shingle beach 3 miles long. Dogs allowed all year. A spit of land separates the beach from a fresh water lake which a nature reserve and very popular with bird watchers and nature ramblers. 30 min walk from house.

Blackpool Sands is a fine shingle beach with a natural pool safe for children to paddle and play in. There is a beach cafe on the beach. 10 minute drive from house. East Portlemouth beaches are 35min drive. Sand castle sand. Dogs allowed.

Travel:

A car is essential for staying in this area.

Distances:

Totnes 30mins. Kingsbridge 20 mins. Dartmouth 15 mins. Salcombe 40 mins.

Torquay 45 mins. Plymouth 50 mins. Exeter 1.5 hrs.

Further Details:

In the village there is an excellent restaurant called The Laughing Monk. There is also a very good village store. 10 minutes away in the Dartmouth direction is Blackpool sands which doesn't allow dogs but is a lovely beach with a very good takeaway and restaurant. 10 mins in the other direction is Torcross where you can find a pub which serves good family meals and a café which serve food during the day and a great breakfast.

In Dartmouth there are many places to eat. For Poshnosh eat at the Sea Horse, try the Dolphin for pub grub or if you want a great atmosphere and a scrummy breakfast go to cafe alfresco.

  • Notes on accommodation: The house is decorated and furnished to suit families with children and a family dog. It would also suit two couples very comfortably with 2 dogs. There is plenty of enclosed outside space. Limit of 5 adults per booking please. There is no smoking permitted in the house. £25 per dog per week. Outside: The house has one enclosed garden and patio at south west facing with table and chairs under a pergola. To the east of the house there is a sheltered decking area with tables and chairs also and some steps which lead to a grassed area with a mature apple tree for shade. Utility Room: Washing machine, coat hooks, mop and bucket, hoover and brush. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All linen is provided and beds are made ready No Towels are provided. Only tea towels and hand towels. Other: There are some lovely sitting out areas for alfresco eating wherever the sun is shining.
