Property description

This is a lovely apartment on the ground floor of an old farmhouse built directly onto the mountainside. At 600m above sea level, it has truly stunning views of the valley of the River Tech from the mountains all the way down to the Mediterranean Sea. The private terrace leads directly onto the swimming pool area and beyond that there is plenty of garden for secluded picnics or just quiet relaxation. The split level kitchen/living room is cut directly into the rock and was originally the farmer’s wine cellar. His small wine press is still in its’ original place! While all of the ceilings have exposed beams and the walls are traditionally lime mortar rendered, the renovation is thoroughly up-to-date and to a high standard. The outside space beyond the private terrace is shared only with the owners who are on hand to offer help and advice to make your stay as enjoyable as possible.

Location Type:

Much of the charm of the property is in how it is set on the terraced mountain side. Sadly this also means that the apartment is unsuitable for people with reduced mobility.

The Apartment's good size private terrace is south facing, overlooking the thermal spa town of Amélie-les-Baines and the steep wooded mountain slopes to the Spanish border. There is a hardwood table with four chairs, a parasol and a barbecue.
The pool has an area of 41sq.m and a constant depth of 1.1 m making it great for swimming whilst being safe for non swimmers. The water temperature is supplemented by large solar panels. There are sun loungers on the deck, a solar heated shower, parasols and a bistro table and chairs. The small pool house has a w.c. and hand wash basin.

Important notes on accommodation

Apartment in Montbolo, Languedoc-Roussillon, France

About the area

We are near enough to the glorious Mediterranean coast for you to savour it as often as you wish. But we are also far enough away to be clear of the hustle and bustle, particularly during July and August. Argeles with its' long, golden beaches, lovely promenade and busy yachting harbour is 26 miles away or just over 50 minutes by car. Collioure, famous for its' medieval harbour and for the anchovies caught around it, is 28 miles away.

How to get there
Our two nearest airports are: Perpignan airport; 31 miles or about 53 minutes by car; Girona airport, 64 miles or 1hr 20 minutes by car.
The two airlines serving these airports are RyanAir (the biggest) and FlyBe. Many more people than we ever imagined, drive down here from the UK, usually breaking the journey with an overnight stay and taking the opportunity to sample another area of France in the process.

Amelie-Les Baines: nearest shops, popular spa town, 4 miles. Ceret: cherry capital of France, Saturday morning market, 9m. Le Perthus: frontier town with Spain, low tax goods, 17m. Figueres: Spain, Dali museum, 33m. Gorges Fou: our Grand Canyon but much narrower, 8m. Villefranche: walled town, vintage railway, great caves, 38m. Perpignan: Department capital, Palace of the Kings of Majorca, 28m. To find us copy this grid ref in the ‘flyto’ box on Google Earth or Maps 42 29'02.23"N 2 39'15.07"E.

Further Details
We are in the heart of the Vallespir, essentially the valley of the River Tech before it spills onto the plain of Roussillon. Both the Vallespir and Roussillon were comarques, or counties, of former Catalonia. The rich mix of Catalan and French culture in a landscape which still owes much to ancient Rome, makes this one of the most appealing areas of France. In addition, of course, we have a great climate and beautiful scenery.

The purity of the light has attracted artists for centuries and the area became particularly famous from the early 20th century on, with the likes of Chagall, Matisse and Picasso all setting up base here. Collioure was immortalised by these artists and Céret was a particular favourite of Picasso.

Local specialties of course include some terrific local wines but there are also some lovely goat and sheep cheeses. Additionally the area is a major soft fruit producer , excelling in peaches , nectarines and cherries. (Céret is the cherry capital of France!)

Our village, Montbolo, nestles at 600 metres on the southern slopes of the Massif of Canigou. Mount Canigou, once thought to be the highest mountain in the region, is sacred to all Catalan people . It is visible as far away as Barcelona and is a symbol of solidity, strength and unity for a cross-border nation profoundly attached to the ancestral traditions which have forged Catalan identity.

Montbolo sits on the mountainside above the pretty thermal spa town of Amelie-les-Baines. It is amongst the four most important health spa sites in the country and is part of a much larger network that the French guard as an essential part of their health-care system. For a large part of the year the population of Amelie is swollen by people here to "take the cure". The result is that Amelie is a true holiday town with that almost tangible sense of optimism in the air that you get with lots of happy people thronging the pavement bars and cafés and market.
