Inside, amazing oak roof timbers, beautiful stone fireplace, old oak floors, whilst outside there’s the large courtyard around which the numerous barns & pigeonnier sit, shaded by an old lime tree. The newly built 10m x 5m pool with roman steps has its own enclosed garden, with terrace, sun loungers, BBQ & dining area under a shaded pergola. There’s lots of space for the children to run, play area, 14ft trampoline, table tennis. Provides the perfect place to relax & unwind yet has plenty of things to do and see, ideal for a family or couple looking for a real French experience.
The main bedroom has a double bed, large wardrobe, chest of drawers and a great view! The mezzanine bedroom has twin beds but an additional single or double bed can be put in if needed. We can provide a cot for either bedroom.

There is a separate laundry room with a washing machine for your use in one of the courtyard building and an iron and ironing board are available.
There is a big open-living space with sofa & chairs. The tv is only provided for watching videos & DVDs - we have a film library so please ask to borrow DVDs. There are lots of books & games as well as local infomation. A CD player/radio is provided.

Access to the gite is up a short flight of external steps once inside the gite, the living accommodation and the master bedroom are on the same level. The mezzanine bedroom is up a flight of stairs and has a sturdy oak balustrade all around it for safety. The mezzanine has low beams and therefore is ideally suited to children or agile adults! There are stair gates for safety.
Unfortunately due to the stairs the gite is inaccessible for people in a wheelchair.
The swimming pool is 10mx5m with roman steps. It is shared with our family but we aim to ensure that you get plenty of time in the pool and area if that is what you like. The pool garden has sun loungers, garden chairs & a dining table under the pergola as well as a BBQ. There are also places to relax in the courtyard - two hammocks shaded by the lime tree, & a table at the bottom of the gite stairs for your sole use. The open cart shed also has a large dining table for times when it's too hot to eat outside. There is ample parking space.
Chez Devalon is an old french dairy farm - we are now running it as a (nearly) organic smallholding, strving at self-sufficiency. We have a small flock of sheep (come in the spring to see the lambs), chickens & we hope to have a few pigs next year. We cut & bale our own hay & straw & grow very small crops of corn & sunflowers for animal feed. We also have an orchard and rather too large veggie patch! Down the road we have a willow plantation.
Important notes on accommodation
A grocery welcome pack is provided for guests staying for one week or more.
There are centrally heated radiators in the two bedrooms and the bathroom and a woodburning stove for heating the main living area. There is a nominal charge for any wood burnt during your stay.
We have all the "gear" for babies and children - cots and bed linen, high chairs, all terrain 3-wheel pushchair, stair gates, as well as indoor and outdoor toys and books.
The gite is perfect for a couple wanting to have a "get away from it all" holiday or for those wanting to explore the area but it is equally suited for a relaxing family holiday in the countryside.
No smoking is allowed in the gite. Well behaved pets may be considered, please ask us.

The nearest coastal beach is at Royal or La Palmyre which is about a 2 hour drive. However there are several river beaches within easy reach - Aubeterre, St Aulaye, Lisle as well as well equipped lakes. Lake Jemaye is our nearest which is well worth the 40 minute drive, where there’s a beach with bars & restaurants overlooking the water front & safe paddling & swimming areas (life guards at peak times).
There is a 9-hole golf club about 20 minute drive from us and an 18-hole course is available in Perigueux about an hour away.

Verteillac lies close by for basic shopping requirements & bank, P.O., bars/restaurants, doctor pharmacy, garage, tourist information. Just 15kms away is Riberac, renowned for its busy Friday market, or in the other direction, Villebois Lavalette, both having good supermarkets & other town amenities. Further afield take a day out to explore Cognac(70km), Bergerac (75km), the vineyards of St Emilion(80km), or Bordeaux (120km)

Try canoeing along the river from Brantome, the little Venice of the Dordogne, to Bordeilles with its fortified chateaux, or explore the quiet but well signed lanes by bike or on foot. Several river beaches are within easy reach where the children can play in the sand & swim or you could visit Lake Jemaye, well worth the 40 minute drive, where there’s a beach with bars & restaurants overlooking the waterfront & safe paddling & swimming areas (life guards at peak times). "Peace and style"
We asked Wendy to organise the weather for us. It took her 2 days but after that we had warm sunshine day after day. The gite has been renovated and updated with much of the old timber retained. The furnishings fit the style perfectly. We didn't use the mezzanine, but there is plenty of space as long as you can find your way through the roof-beams - fine for children. The shower-room/toilet is recently fitted out and everywhere was bright and clean. The kitchen area has all the equipment needed for your stay and Wendy had provided some basics in the fridge for our arrival. There was a tiny TV which we didn't use. The pool is just the other side of the courtyard with a good space round it for relaxing. We played table tennis in the barn, had breakfast in the courtyard and in the evening walked round the farm and talked to the sheep while watching the sun set over the lovely rolling countryside, listening to the cuckoo and swallows. I borrowed a bike - there is a tandem to hire if you have the inclination. The local area is very rural and quiet. A car is pretty essential for getting around. Wendy and Matt (and their 3 boys) were ideal hosts, knowledgeable about the area, helpful hospitable, unobtrusive.
Tres Bon - What a wonderful place, plenty of open space to just relax and enjoy. The owners are brill, like your own family and you must sample Wendy`s cooking. Highly recommended hence we're going back for more. "The gities", Derbyshire
A lovely, well equipped gite, beautiful away from it all location. This is our second visit and the kids are already asking when they can go back again! Wendy, Matt & the family once again made us feel extremely welcome, they aways went that extra mile to sort things out for us. Pip & Kev, Nottingham
Our French Experience -Just got back from staying at Chez Devallon. What a stunning place to stay. The gite was as described and more. Very peaceful with spectacular views, only regret was that it wasn't later in the year when the fields of sunflowers would be in bloom. Wendy and Matt really friendly, hardworking couple with charming children. Would recommend for all, plenty to do in the area & plenty of places to eat closeby. Tillydog, Stockton
